Pet redemption general geo. armstrong custer. December 14, 2013. History’s played a big part on our collective opinion of General George Armstrong Custer, most specifically in what has come to be known as his ‘last stand’ at the ‘Battle at Little Bighorn’. Often, we forget what we’ve in common; what makes us human. Custer loved his dogs.

Living. simply. above all. Flying flowers missoula butterfly house insectarium. December 5, 2013. December 6, 2013. There are certain stories that will make you smile; this is one of them. In june 2010 the chrysalis was formed for the Missoula Butterfly House Insectarium. This was no easy task, given the economic climate of the past decade and a collective reluctance to contribute to, well, anything that seems to be frivolous. the mere mention of ‘butterflies’ would, no doubt, inspire ske...A team lead b...

I was greeted by this female Peregrine Falcon nested on a ledge outside my hotel window in Silver Springs, Maryland, sitting on 4 eggs. I was lucky to get an out of focus, fast shot of the male giving her … Continued. Harry Howard and Barbara Batey: Montana. Posted in: Snork Dorks. Whitney Tilt – Snork Dork, First Class. If you asked my big girls to describe the attributes of their personal heavens, each would cite unlimited French fries and hundreds of playful cats. While Powerwoman and I haven’t been able to deliver on the French fries yet, we did find a spot that blew their cat-loving dreams. The place: the Lanai Cat Sanctuary. On the Hawaiian Island of Lanai. Nature. Observation. Discovery. Community. Friday Field Notes: Oh, I Have Been Inspired! I love nature journaling, but, frankly, it has been a number of months since I have opened my journal. A few weeks ago I noticed that MNHC was offering a weekend drawing workshop with the talented Nancy Seiler. I thought to myself, what better way to get back into nature journaling than to take a class where I must make keen observations of natural objects and draw them for 8 hours a day? Entry 1: November 20th, 2013.

Nature. Observation. Discovery. Community. Traveling in the Backcountry: the essentials. A cold sweat chills me from under my backpack straps. The rhythm of my ascent up the clean white mountain side hypnotizes me. S lide-clack slide-clack. Exploring backcountry terrain in winter is inherently risky, so there are a few things I bring along in my backpack and in my brain to try to minimize that risk or avoid it altogether. It is really important to continually check the depth of the snow pack you're trave...

Nature. Observation. Discovery. Community. Under the Microscope: The Spring Equinox. The Equinoxes only happen twice per year, around March 20. And mark the generally accepted beginnings of spring and autumn, respectively. It’s easy to forget though that just as our northern hemisphere is slowly blooming into spring, the southern hemisphere will be celebrating the autumn harvest. Another interesting fact: the sun rises precisely from the east and sets precisely in the west on equinoxes. What Bird is That?

What is Land Snorkeling? Land snorkeling is reestablishing the ancient connections to our landscape. We open up all of our senses to experience the hidden treasures of nature. We develop our intellect thru our senses. We sniff it, touch it, examine the texture, color, shape, etc. etc. We look closely at things like a feather found in the grass, a wing design, a rocks texture, and the pattern of a tree growing.
