Mike and Susan's kiwi home-swapping adventure!
New Zealand 2010: December 2010
https://molloys2010nz.blogspot.com/2010_12_01_archive.html
Mike and Susan's kiwi home-swapping adventure! Marlborough Sounds (November 29). One more full day to see New Zealand. We decided to spend it on the Queen Charlotte Drive from Havelock to Picton, and take in the beauty of the Marlborough Sounds one last time. It might be a little cooler up there, and at 10AM Blenheim was well on the way to its forecasted high of over 84 degrees. Not big fans of the heat, but well aware of the weather we will be going home to, we have no complaints! It was fun to see them...

New Zealand 2010: Farewell Spit (Nov 17-19)
https://molloys2010nz.blogspot.com/2010/11/farewell-spit-nov-17-19.html
Mike and Susan's kiwi home-swapping adventure! Farewell Spit (Nov 17-19). View of Nelson, across Tasman Bay. With our December 1 departure date drawing near and a fine weather window ahead, we headed out Wednesday morning towards Golden Bay and the Farewell Spit. The 3-4 hour drive included some great lookout spots, especially as we made our way over the steep and winding roads of "the hill" (Takaka Hill), although we mostly drove straight through to Collingwood. We stayed at the Heron's Rest. Stands for...

Mike and Susan's kiwi home-swapping adventure! Windy Birding at Wairau Bar. Royal Spoonbill having a bad crest day. No, not that kind of bar! The Wairau Bar is at the mouth of the Wairau River, about a 10 minute drive from our home base of Blenheim in Marlborough on the South Island. The Wairau Bar is a gravel bar north of the mouth of the river - the Wairau Lagoons, where we had birded. A few days before, are on the south side of the mouth. The Wairau Bar is an important archeological area. As we were l...
New Zealand 2010: Keeping it Local

Mike and Susan's kiwi home-swapping adventure! Roses blooming at our home in Blenheim. We've been to the movies which was not remarkably different than back home. A stroll in Pollard Park and Centennial Rose Garden was a lovely way to spend the afternoon. In fact, roses are in full bloom all over town and at our front door. NZ flag at half mast. One night our neighbor invited us to attend the Marlborough Camera Club. Susan was thrilled to finally visit Elite Pavlova. The Pav and Pie shop that we had driv...

Mike and Susans adventures in travel, photography, birdwatching and life. Dream Lake Hike (Jan 27, 2015). We had our heads down "working" at home when we learned that Tim and Karen, recent transplants to Colorado, were heading up to Rocky the next day, and asked if we wanted to join them on a winter hike. Here are some photos from the hike. Frozen over Nymph Lake with Hallett Peak in background. The trail above Nymph Lake. Tim and Karen on their way up. Dream Lake, with Hallett and Flattop Mountains.

Mike and Susans adventures in travel, photography, birdwatching and life. Milky Way over Lake Irene (Oct 24). Interests me, but I'm not really an astronomer-type with a camera and telescope (like my talented photographer friend Pat. But I do enjoy trying to make images of the stars. I like being outside, especially in a really dark sky area. Image from near Walden, Colorado during Aug 2013 Perseids. Though most of Rocky Mountain National Park. Light pollution map for Colorado (from 2006 satellite data).

Mike and Susans adventures in travel, photography, birdwatching and life. Fading Light and Active Clouds (May 25, 2015). As the light began to fade today, Susan said, as she often does, "you should take a picture of that.". She is usually right, so I did. :-). Here are a few pictures taken as the light faded on the mountains around our house. Detail of the rocks and trees to the southeast. Rocks and trees to the east. Detail of some formations to the south. Monday, May 25, 2015. View to the northwest.

Mike and Susans adventures in travel, photography, birdwatching and life. Almost Home: Denver and Breckenridge. While we were sweltering in Williamsburg. Our Moorea home swap friends were experiencing an unusually big spring snow storm and enjoying winter ski conditions at Arapahoe Basin. The next morning we decided to check out nearby Rocky Mountain Arsenal. Rabbit at Rocky Mountain Arsenal. American Bison at RMA, unfortunately in a fenced enclosure. 2014 CHBA Beginning level band. We enjoyed playing wi...

Mike and Susans adventures in travel, photography, birdwatching and life. Weekend Water (June 15). Susan and I had been wanting to get up to Glacier Gorge and Alberta Falls to see Glacier Creek and the high water flow of the spring melt-off, so on Sunday we headed up into the park. I brought the tripod and other gear so we could shoot the flowing water along the way, and we enjoyed our frequent stops to take in the fast-rushing water along Glacier Creek. Glacier Creek below Alberta Falls. Sprague Lake wi...

Mike and Susans adventures in travel, photography, birdwatching and life. Fairbanks, Alaska - Part III: The Northern Lights! Continued from Part II. It's not easy seeing green. :-). Our alarms would go off at 11:30pm or midnight after afternoon and/or evening naps. We'd check our devices and apps - "Fairbanks has lights! The Facebook Aurora Borealis Notifications (ABN) page. On the way I looked out my window and saw some strange cloud like movement in the sky. Wow, I was seeing it! After the first full d...

Mike and Susans adventures in travel, photography, birdwatching and life. Front Range Pika Project (Aug/Sep). American Pika near Crater Lake, Maroon Bells, Colorado. We travel with a stuffed pika named "Petey" on our dashboard and I hike with him in my backpack. He's an American Pika. Of course. :-). Petey Pika on the Alaska Highway. So when I learned about the Front Range Pika Project. I knew this was the citizen science. They are not rodents! Dick was a local Estes Park photographer. We were given a ha...

Mike and Susans adventures in travel, photography, birdwatching and life. Lake Helene Snowshoe Hike (Feb 24, 2015). Susan and I have been talking about a bigger snowshoe hike for the past month or so, and we kept coming back to the idea of hiking up to Lake Helene in Rocky Mountain National Park, especially after a couple of our friends skied up there recently. We've hiked this area before, but not in the winter. We'd gotten quite a bit of fresh snow recently and heard trail conditions were excellent.

Mike and Susans adventures in travel, photography, birdwatching and life. Fairbanks, Alaska Aurora-chasing - Part II (March 10-23, 2015). Continued from Part I. The Aurora was so active this year that our chasing had left us little time for much else besides trying to catch up on sleep during the day. Not everything in Fairbanks is about the aurora :-). We never tired of our view of the birch forest around "our house". We dropped in to Creamer's Field Migratory Wildlife Refuge. A real ice house! In Fairb...

Alaska 2009
Mike and Susan drive the Alaska Highway, experience their first home exchange. And meander back home 7 weeks later. We had fully intended to keep a journal of our driving trip to Alaska. Our New Zealand 2010 blog. Has been a wonderful way to preserve memories and organize photos. With a little perseverance, I think we just may be able to think back and create something similar for the Summer of 2009. Entering Alaska from Canada on the ALCAN Highway. Be sure to read the oldest post(s) first. It felt good ...

Monday, October 1, 2012. Molloys Guide to Oktoberfest. At Molloys we're all about celebrating great beers, and there are few greater beer celebrations than Munich's Oktoberfest. We now stock five of the six official Oktoberfest beers, so pick some up, find a pretzel and get in the spirit. Though the focus often seems to be on great beer, that's only a part of a festival celebrating all things Bavarian. Germany is famous for its beers and the Reinheitsgebot (German beer purity law,) but Oktoberfest kicks ...
