Monday, February 21, 2011. Another Transcript I Submitted to Phi Delta Kappan. Roles in Literature Circles and the Benefits of Expertise. By: Karen Yancey M.Ed, July 2007. I read that the use of role sheets is important to prevent feelings of confusion because students are working together and analyzing text in ways they are not familiar (Alexander, 3). Therefore, I required my students to fill out a pre-printed Group Member Role sheet and Notes on Group Activity log during each discussion. I used anothe...

Lesson Place: Playing Water
http://lessonplace.blogspot.com/2010/06/playing-water.html
Wednesday, June 23, 2010. Developmentally, children subconsciously learn about the basic properties of water when they pour it from one container to another, spill it on the concrete and push toys into it. They learn about volume, conservation of mass, adhesion and cohesion. Though, to them it is just fun playtime. I wish college classes were like that. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Lesson Place: In Between the Lions
http://lessonplace.blogspot.com/2010/10/in-between-lions.html
Tuesday, October 19, 2010. In Between the Lions. I am impressed by the PBS kids show called In Between the Lions. It is intended to teach reading to first through third graders. It follows a variety show format much like Sesame Street and The Electric Company. Sesame Street is intended for preparing preschoolers by teaching letters and numbers. The Electric Company is for fourth, fifth and sixth graders to expand vocabulary, reading skills and social skills. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Just a Sub...

Lesson Place: While I Was Teaching an English Class, I Read a Good Essay on Writing
http://lessonplace.blogspot.com/2011/02/while-i-was-teaching-english-class-i.html
Saturday, February 12, 2011. While I Was Teaching an English Class, I Read a Good Essay on Writing. I recently read an essay by Pat Mora to a English classroom full of bored students. The essay was entitled My Own True Name. And it was from a collection of poems for children by Mora. I couldn't find a copy of the essay online but I did find another essay on her website about Leading From the Heart. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). My Blogs and Websites. Karen Yancey's Blog: February 2011
http://karenyancey.blogspot.com/2011_02_01_archive.html
Tuesday, February 1, 2011. The Problem Of School Dropouts. I read an article in the Phi Delta Kappan entitled Keeping Youths in School: An International Perspective. I have thought in the past that the U.S has the wrong philosophy on how to address the educational needs of its younger generation who are not academically inclined. America has a sink or swim philosophy which rewards those who apply themselves to the theoretical education that is prevalant in the public schools. Mutual obligation policies&#...
