That’s Why They Call It a Spectrum. April 14, 2015. That’s Why They Call It a Spectrum. It’s April, which means it’s Autism Awareness Month. Given that I have a smart, stubborn eleven-year-old daughter with autism, April doesn’t feel different than any other month of the year. Every month is autism awareness month in my house. But I know that isn’t true for many households, so I think it’s wonderful that we have a month to help people understand an often misunderstood disability. We joked about it being ...

May 12, 2015. By Deborah Leigh Norman. Having lived in four states around the country over the last dozen years, I have become proficient at moving and organizing. I put items in boxes with labels to make things easier for me. I have found that people often use the same approach with other people; they put them in boxes with labels to make things easier for themselves. For more information please visit r-word.org. Over/ Under the Rainbow. April 28, 2015. It’s just in the katas (choreographed karate moves) where you see the awkward postures, his tentativeness. Grappling and sparring, too, are really difficult for him. Of my teaching skills to draw this out of him), demonstration of all katas (forms) and self-defense moves, including strikes, blocks, kicks, stances; a four station board break, a written test, a professionally altered uniform, AND $250! That was hard. I was too tentative, he said. I think,. But here ...

Kierra Raine and Co. Some folks call her handicapped, we call her our Wildflower Child. Monthly Archives: January 2015. January 20, 2015. It’s nearing the end of January. That means it will soon be a year since Kierra joined the angels in heaven. Last year we had spent lots of time in the hospital. She would have her favorite blanket to hang onto and her cutest outfits to make the room feel more cozy. And when I had some extra time, I would paint our toenails with matching polish. So you are all official...

Remember when your hope is lost and faith is shaken. Remember when you wonder if you’re going to make it. There’s a hand stretched out through your deepest doubt. We can’t pretend to see the ending. Or what’s coming up ahead. Don’t know the story of tomorrow. But we can stay close to the One who knows. We can trust our God. Though it might hurt now.

Kierra Raine and Co. Some folks call her handicapped, we call her our Wildflower Child. Monthly Archives: May 2015. The Colors Of Joy. May 21, 2015. There is new life all around us. Nature bursting at the seams with birdsong and lilacs and green grass and fruit blossoms. Shy buds opening slowly, unfurling tender blooms. Tiny herbs lifting fragrant savory green heads toward the sunshine. And a table for two that My Love surprised me with for Mother’s Day. Painting by the River with your paint loving son.

Kierra Raine and Co. Some folks call her handicapped, we call her our Wildflower Child. August 6, 2015. It’s already August. That magical month between the glorious July of summer and the autumn tones of chilly September. We packed our July so full I didn’t have time to catorgize all the memories but they are stored safe and sound in my heart. Hot showers, bathrooms, and a laundry made it very comfy and the all night rain was actually nearly as delightful music as a lullaby. That’s serious stuff :).

Kierra Raine and Co. Some folks call her handicapped, we call her our Wildflower Child. Monthly Archives: July 2015. July 27, 2015. It seems when I boldly declare my stand for Christ and His promises, that crafty Satan comes weaseling depressing thoughts and degrading hopeless words into my mind. This weekend we spent some time with Steve’s folks camping and also some time just with the three of us. Emotions can do that too. Eventually the original struggle has morphed into so many little tendrils th...

Kierra Raine and Co. Some folks call her handicapped, we call her our Wildflower Child. August 9, 2016. I lay this morning in that quietness between sleep and fully awake and I held as still as possible and willed myself to stay there. I had been dreaming of my daughter, and I was holding her again. There was a deep deep peace in my dream and it should not have been there. When do you feel deep peace in a hospital room with a critically ill child? My words are so tiny and course to describe that epiphany.

Monday, November 21, 2011. There will always be serendipitous moments. Monday, November 7, 2011. I think I have become the Chinese Dear Abbey, or I would call it Dear Ling Chi, which is the name my students gave me. I get about 3-4 messages a day from my students asking for advice or help with something. I have included a few of the messages and my responses, I may do this weekly so anyone can see how dear, and wonderful these young women are. How are you doing these days in America? I think it is cool!

Motheringly Insane
Tuesday, February 3, 2015. Back in the Mommy Saddle Again. Well it has been a long time without posting and here is why. I had to return to full time employment after my son, Keith, sliced his fingers off in an accident. It's amazing how expensive delicate hand surgeons are. I about had a heart attack the first time I saw the office visit bill. $2500 he bills to my insurance company! I won't even tell you what he billed for the 5 hour surgery. AMAZING!
