Of moths and man (and other stuff)

Of moths and man (and other stuff). Friday, August 14, 2015. Eype of the Tiger. I've just returned from a great two-week family holiday to the west Dorset coast. Staying just inland from Charmouth, we had easy access to lots of great coastal sites. Fossil hunting and rock pooling were frequent events and the later turned up lots of goodies (for me at least! On our first afternoon. My main target was Cliff Tiger-beetle Cylindera germanica. But still as feisty and ready to give a nip. On his great blog ale...

Of moths and man (and other stuff): Tiger in the kitchen

http://www.mothsandman.blogspot.com/2015/07/tiger-in-kitchen.html

Of moths and man (and other stuff). Tuesday, July 14, 2015. Tiger in the kitchen. I normally just ignore craneflies but this one caught my eye as it was a bit of a looker with those stripes. Turns out it's a Tiger Cranefly. Not one I've knowingly seen before. Apparently adults take nectar and pollen from flowers. Their larvae look pretty much like all other. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). View my complete profile. Well marked and buff. Tiger in the kitchen. Look at the palps on that.

Of moths and man (and other stuff). Sunday, July 26, 2015. With the abysmal weather of the last few days and a mounting workload before summer holidays next week, natural history has taken a bit of a sideline. I have had the moth trap a couple of times which has resulted in three new species for the garden. Firstly, Lunar-spotted Pinion Cosmia pyralina,. Not one that was on my radar and threw me at first when i turned over the egg box. Not unsusal locally though apparently. Sunday, July 19, 2015. Not one...

Of moths and man (and other stuff). Saturday, January 24, 2015. My first woodlouse.or is it? Well I say my first woodlouse, but in all honesty I've seen hundreds of the things it's just that I've never got round to trying to identifying one to species. So while laying a hedge and moving some bricks in the garden today I decided to pot a couple I found and sat down with a copy of the AIDGAP Woodlice book by Hopkins. Unsurprisingly, it keyed out as the rather common Oniscus asellus. Sunday, January 18, 2015.

Of moths and man (and other stuff). Tuesday, April 28, 2015. Or that's what was in my mind as I noticed something glinting in the afternoon light as I went to cut a sprig of rosemary from the garden. The Rosemary Beetle - three in fact, nibbling away on the ingredient that gives my pasta sauce that certain je ne sais quoi! But it turns out they are about as American as . something not very American! A veritable faux amis. A good looking beetle but if my wife sees it on the lavender there could be trouble!

http://www.mothsandman.blogspot.com/2015_02_01_archive.html

Of moths and man (and other stuff). Sunday, February 15, 2015. And so it begins. Third time lucky. Finally got my 2015 garden moth list off to a flying start last night, with my third trapping session of the year. Well I say flying, the single moth I caught was, and even that wasn't in the trap. Was the only thing doing but despite being pretty common I didn't catch it last year and so therefore is new for the garden. Saturday, February 14, 2015. When is a daddy longlegs a daddy longlegs? Are introduced ...

Dead Man's Teal: August 2015

http://deadmansteal.blogspot.com/2015_08_01_archive.html

Moths etc from the Fen Edge of Cambridgeshire. Sunday, 23 August 2015. Toadflax Brocade 21 August 2015. Was the clear highlight of my first trapping effort in the garden for a month. This is a rare (Red Data Book) species and needless to say a first for the garden (#452. It is semi-regular at just a small handful of sites in Cambs. A small totrix I absentmindedly took a photo of turned out to be Epinotia nisella - another addition, although more expected, to the garden (#453). Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

Dead Man's Teal: 12th August 2016

http://deadmansteal.blogspot.com/2016/08/12th-august-2016.html

Moths etc from the Fen Edge of Cambridgeshire. Friday, 19 August 2016. Putting out a moth trap with a freshly broken ankle was a rather poor idea and I wasn't even rewarded for my bravery/stupidity with anything too exciting. Sallow Kitten is always nice to see though and a couple of other species were also new to the garden:. Sallow Kitten Furcula furcula. Straw Underwing Thalpophila matura. Flounced Rustic Luperina testacea. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Cottenham, Cambridgeshire, United Kingdom.

Dead Man's Teal: September 2016

http://deadmansteal.blogspot.com/2016_09_01_archive.html

Moths etc from the Fen Edge of Cambridgeshire. Thursday, 29 September 2016. 25th September 2016 - Convolvulus Hawkmoth. This monster was in the trap this morning:. Convolvulus Hawkmoth Agrius convolvuli. A classic migrant that has had a decent run of records on the coast the last couple of weeks but still brilliant to get one here. This is almost certainly a 'second-hand' lifer as Martin Fowlie caught one the night before and its surely the same individual. Monday, 19 September 2016. 254] Small Dusty Wave.

Moths etc from the Fen Edge of Cambridgeshire. Thursday, 25 August 2016. Despite some spectacular electrical storm the humidity won out and I hobbled into the garden to put the trap out. Nothing too thrilling turned up although a few things escaped as I struggled with the basics of picking up an egg box without dropping it back to the floor again. Nevermind. Orange Swift Hepialus sylvina. The Nutmeg Anarta trifolii. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Cottenham, Cambridgeshire, United Kingdom.

Dead Man's Teal: June 2016

http://deadmansteal.blogspot.com/2016_06_01_archive.html

Moths etc from the Fen Edge of Cambridgeshire. Thursday, 30 June 2016. A new moth for me was the less than inspiring Bryotropha domestica. But thankfully new for the year/garden Buff Arches and Pebble Prominent were a bit more aesthetically pleasing. A Scorched Carpet was also quite tidy and only the second (I think) that I have caught in Cottenham. Scorched Carpet Ligdia adustata. Pebble Prominent Notodonta ziczac. Altogether another eight species added to the list:. Barred Straw Gandaritis pyraliata.

Moths etc from the Fen Edge of Cambridgeshire. Sunday, 28 August 2016. Glad to add one of my favourite moths to the garden list:. Frosted Orange Gortyna flavago. Nothing else of note so here's pictures of two of the regular late summer grass moths:. Thursday, 25 August 2016. Orange Swift Hepialus sylvina. The Nutmeg Anarta trifolii. Friday, 19 August 2016. Sketches from the garden. I've been so busy lately that I've fallen behind with my Every Day in May posting, though I have been keeping up with doing some art every day.honest! Today, I'm catching up a little bit by posting some sketches of things growing in our garden.
