Mountain Runner: IMRA versus the FRA
http://www.mountain-runner.com/2014/05/imra-versus-fra.html
The continuing story and commentary of Lydiard and running technique coach Rene Borg. Thursday, May 22, 2014. IMRA versus the FRA. The other night I finished ‘It’s a hill get over it’, Steve Chilton’s new book and the latest entry into the line of fell running lore*, and it left me thinking about the differences between the FRA and IMRA and how these differences might inform us about the future direction of IMRA and some of the challenges the organisation faces. Mountain running versus fell running.
Mountain Runner: RACES: Strawberry Half-Marathon
http://www.mountain-runner.com/2010/06/races-strawberry-half-marathon.html
The continuing story and commentary of Lydiard and running technique coach Rene Borg. Monday, June 28, 2010. Strawberries are perhaps my favourite fruit; half-marathon is my favourite distance: So how could anything go wrong at the inaugural running of Jane and Graham Porter’s Strawberry Half-Marathon. Behind me two difficult seasons: Ahead of me, the road away. From perdition. My pre-race internal fighting-talk had been blunt: “The half-marathon is my home-turf, my ground. Enniscorthy in flames…. The gu...
Mountain Runner: RACES: Earl’s Drive (Djouce Trail)
http://www.mountain-runner.com/2015/07/races-earls-drive-djouce-trail.html
The continuing story and commentary of Lydiard and running technique coach Rene Borg. Thursday, July 30, 2015. RACES: Earl’s Drive (Djouce Trail). I’ve been throwing races into my schedule at random since around May when I decided to kick myself out of the ‘plodding state’ and get some power back before the next big training build-up and this Wednesday I decided to do my first IMRA. Race since I finished 7th in the Wicklow Way Trail back in 2012. If you don’t count my run in the Wicklow Way Relay. To set...
Mountain Runner: RACES: Wicklow Way Relay Leg 7 - 2011
http://www.mountain-runner.com/2011/06/races-wicklow-way-relay-leg-7-2011.html
The continuing story and commentary of Lydiard and running technique coach Rene Borg. Wednesday, June 15, 2011. RACES: Wicklow Way Relay Leg 7 - 2011. Leg 7 is schizophrenic:. It can’t decide if it’s a tough road run or an easy. A sinewy moustached Wicklow man walked up on Iron Bridge: “You are Mick Byrne,” I said and shook his hand, “it’s a pleasure to finally meet you,” leg 7 has been my private obsession since 2008, now I had finally met the record-holder. Rene running to his one true passion…. 8220;H...
Mountain Runner: RACES: Wicklow Way Relay–leg 6
http://www.mountain-runner.com/2015/05/races-wicklow-way-relayleg-6.html
The continuing story and commentary of Lydiard and running technique coach Rene Borg. Monday, May 25, 2015. RACES: Wicklow Way Relay–leg 6. Yet despite all this I am determined to write on last blog before entering the ranks of ‘fatherhood’ expectedly within the next few days! Thankfully, Aoife is as fond of the relay as I am and we decided to gamble and take it on anyway. ‘Plan the day itself as if I’m not there,’ I told Jason. 8216;A busy man’. With plenty on my plate I did not intend to compete in the...

Roy In Ireland: December 2009
http://royinireland.blogspot.com/2009_12_01_archive.html
Monday, December 14, 2009. So that's the end of my little Irish adventure. Almost two years after arriving in Ireland I flew out of Cork yesterday (Thursday 10th Dec) to spend some brief time in Birmingham with Mum before heading off back to Jersey where I landed today (Friday 11th Dec). In due course I'll maybe write a proper retrospective. But for now, things I'll miss about Ireland. 8226; My many friends at Crusaders AC in Dublin - I just can't believe that I'll never see many of them again. 8226; The...
Roy In Ireland: June 2009
http://royinireland.blogspot.com/2009_06_01_archive.html
Monday, June 29, 2009. I touched in my last entry on Travellers, that social group in Ireland that are nomadic and who are generally looked upon with suspicion (at best) and actively disliked by many. But they remain, happily in my opinion, part of the Irish landscape. But what a pity we can’t take them back to those horse-drawn caravan days with their campfires on lonely country roads, scaring the bejaysus out of timid English boys. Links to this post. Sunday, June 28, 2009. Links to this post. My stand...
Roy In Ireland: 1,000 Miles
http://royinireland.blogspot.com/2009/12/1000-miles.html
Tuesday, December 1, 2009. I had resolved to do the final seven miles this morning and the weather gods weren't going to stop me. It was lashing down and the wind was howling as I set off from Togher up Spur Hill. Truly it was a day when the general populace is proved correct in regarding us runners as slightly insane. Whatever, I turned around today and with the contours and conditions now very much in my favour I scooted back at a fair old trot and fairly flew (for me) the last couple of miles in sub-8s.
Roy In Ireland: February 2009
http://royinireland.blogspot.com/2009_02_01_archive.html
Friday, February 27, 2009. Mott The Hoople Reunion. Something that no one thought would actually happen, a Mott The Hoople reunion! The original lineup of Ian Hunter, Mick Ralphs, Overend Watts, Verden Allen and Dale Griffin. I've grabbed a pair of tickets for the first night at the Hammersmith Odeon on 1 October. So now I've got to grow my hair and acquire some shades so I'll have a bit of 'cred' on concert night! Links to this post. No speed sessions at the track though. In honesty it would mean sa...
Roy In Ireland: Caution, Bowling In Progress
http://royinireland.blogspot.com/2009/11/caution-bowing-in-progress.html
Monday, November 30, 2009. Caution, Bowling In Progress. Today's match was a pretty low-key affair though with only a dozen or so spectators. I stopped to allow one chap to take his turn which proved a weak, off-target effort and I proceeded on my way. So 12 miles in 2:07 making 27 on the week and 993 for the year to date. All things being equal I'll try to wrap up the 1,000 on Tuesday. So, thats what road bowling is. I was running near Cork airport earlier this year (very close to the route you just...

There's no line judge here. Friday, March 26, 2010. Apologies been really busy/lazy of late and to be honest I have had to force myself to blog tonight. Things I've done,. Went on honeymoon and only got 2 climbing days out of 10 in a very snowy Font. Skied in Austria wich was great and I progressed on to the black runs. Stayed in the alleged most romantic hotel in Salzburg. Ran from Dun laoghaire to Howth after work. Now they call me forest, it took 2hours 18 min the last kilometer taking over 6 min's.
