The Transcontinental: September 2014
http://the-transcontinental.blogspot.com/2014_09_01_archive.html
Wednesday, September 24, 2014. This blog still exists. It seems odd to think that this blog has been around for 7 years, limping along, a post here and there, lately reflecting not much more than a profound desire to avoid writing. Of course we know why- there's a dissertation to be written! In any event, writing at all has proven difficult. And indeed, when one looks across the infinite horizon of the virtual landscape, there are moribund blogs everywhere. So maybe it isn't just me. I call it the "Under...

Kinds of minds | Notes on The Cultured Life

Notes on The Cultured Life. In lieu of a footnote). Appears frequently in this blog — usually in connection with aesthetic musings — reflections on the the subject of why some people like what others do not. It is as frequently objected to by my readers who generously — and in keeping with their very good democratic instincts — object to the idea that human beings might somehow be born unequal. 8211; ahem –. 8212; perhaps because to so many people it seems to lie so close to. 8212; many of us feel oblige...

MASTERS OF 20TH CENTURY FIGURE SCULPTURE
http://www.ilovefiguresculpture.com/masters/masters20.html
As Ilene Susan Fort noted in "The Figure in American Sculpture: A Question of Modernity" (1995), most kinds of 20th C. American figure sculpture are outside the canonical narrative of Modernism. And the same can be said for figure sculpture from every other country, especially those in the Soviet Bloc, despite its prolific production in both Modern-Classical and Social Realism. So very little has been presented by contemporary institutions of culture (universities, art museums, etc). Eja Van Den Berg.

The Thai term benjarong. Is derived from Sanskrit panchrang. For "five colors". It describes a type of pottery still made in Thailand today. It was originally made exclusively for the ceremonial needs of the Thai court, to Thai designs and patterns, in China. Several producers make it in Thailand today, with varying degrees of technical expertise. This one, my newest puppy, about 20 cm high, is by one of the best, Vangtal. The gold is 14K. Un conte de Noel. The wretched tiresomeness of the anglos. There are numerous films with this title, both French and English. Invariably, the English movies are about the same things as the French ones: betrayal, disloyalty, sexual dalliance, parents’ failure to love their children (and the reverse), failure to live up to standards of friendship; and so forth. In short: moral failure all along the line; which is to say, well, life. Here is to the French. ( Herdade grande. In the world, no? Is mostly lowe...

چهارباغ: Struggling to understand (2)
http://dejouer.blogspot.com/2010/04/struggling-to-understand-2.html
Struggling to understand (2). Experienced by the author of the reviewed book. (If never as humiliating, thanks be to Mighty Athena). Yet, nothing in my life has felt as exciting, as meaningful, as enriching and as lasting as my cultural experiences: the discovery of Balinese dance-drama, Kathakali, Thai matmee. Lacquer-ware, serialism, Josquin's L'Homme Arme. Masses, some poems by Milosz, the Pillow Book. A man is a man is a man. October 2, 2010 at 11:37 AM. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Ustad Sult...
