Chiang Mai, Pai & Koh Samet | SC & LC

https://mrstephenconnor.wordpress.com/2016/08/22/chiang-mai-pai-koh-samet

Having a look about. Chiang Mai, Pai and Koh Samet. August 5th – August 22nd. Chiang Mai is the largest city in the north of Thailand, full of backpackers who want to explore the surrounding jungle and mountains to do things like caring for elephants or white-water rafting or zip-lining. The old city is littered with the ubiquitous temples and is fringed by the old city walls, just outside which are markets of various sizes, all selling handmade wares and delicious foods. We liked it here. Enjoying the h...

Bolivia | SC & LC

https://mrstephenconnor.wordpress.com/2016/05/02/bolivia

Having a look about. April 22nd – April 30th. We started our foray into Bolivia by hopping half an hour over the border to Copacabana, a tourist trap lying on the shore of Lake Titicaca. The lake itself is the highest navigable lake in the world, stretching over both eastern Peru and western Bolivia for almost 200km, and it is really rather pretty. Dawn at Lake Titicaca. View across the lake from Isla del Sol. Stations of the Cross overlooking Copacabana. Needless to say we were excited about La Paz.

Arequipa and the Colca Canyon | SC & LC

https://mrstephenconnor.wordpress.com/2016/04/12/arequipa-and-the-colca-canyon

Having a look about. Arequipa and the Colca Canyon. April 6th – April 11th. Arequipa is Peru’s second city and is overlooked by three volcanoes – El Misti (which looks just like a volcano I’d have drawn when I was five – perfectly conical and snow-capped), Chachani and Pichu Pichu – and sits around 2380m above sea level. Arequipa is Quechua for ‘just stay’. The other reason for the nickname is because so many of the buildings are made of sillar,. A white stone formed by the surrounding volcanoes. Arequip...

Buenos Aires, Colonia and Montevideo | SC & LC

https://mrstephenconnor.wordpress.com/2016/05/30/buenos-airescolonia-and-montevideo

Having a look about. Buenos Aires, Colonia and Montevideo. May 15th – May 28th. Having spent every other day either looking for new accommodation or taking 20 hour buses, we decided to treat ourselves and book an Airbnb for a week in Argentina’s capital. It was a good decision – we could eat breakfast when we wanted, cook with pans that had handles and basically behave like adults instead of the teenage backpackers we clearly aren’t. We celebrated Diego with a steak. We are really looking forward to it.

The Haptic Monk Says “Give” – Whatonomy

https://whatonomy.wordpress.com/2015/07/09/the-haptic-monk-says-give

Towards a unified theory of negative capability. July 9, 2015. July 9, 2015. The Haptic Monk Says “Give”. 8220;I’m going to need bigger pockets.”. In a taxi, wending home, full of grumble, gripe and a general demeanour more akin to Victor Meldrew than my usual Father Furlong (ask anyone who knows me better than they would like), I tapped listlessly at my phone’s screen as silent as a haptic monk. I’d spent the day (between lessons) trawling www.primarycurriculum.me.uk. It has been a fractious week academ...

https://whatonomy.wordpress.com/2015/07/17/i-can-say-goodbye-to-only-so-many-hamsters-my-teacher5aday

Towards a unified theory of negative capability. July 17, 2015. July 30, 2015. I can say goodbye to only so many hamsters: my #teacher5aday. How those prawn’s eyes bore into me: ‘J’accuse! 8217; they say. I can say goodbye to only so many hamsters. Indeed, I wouldn’t be at all surprised if my neighbours suspect me of having a long-term plan to make a jacket out of a thousand hamster hides: less Buffalo Bill, more Hamster Harry. My addiction to Twitter is now total. Whilst you may snot up from time to...

We, Heartless Engineers: A meditation on the danger of a cauterized curriculum – Whatonomy

https://whatonomy.wordpress.com/2015/06/23/we-heartless-engineers-a-meditation-on-the-danger-of-a-cauterized-curriculum/comment-page-1

Towards a unified theory of negative capability. June 23, 2015. September 5, 2015. We, Heartless Engineers: A meditation on the danger of a cauterized curriculum. The kettle is on, gas whistling through pipes and burning blue (a most occult colour of flame). What would life be without art? No sharks in fish tanks, nor unmade beds; no Sheffield male-strippers transcending poverty; no Molly Bloom. Yes, no Molly Bloom. No cold and broken hallelujahs. But money. Lots of money. June 23, 2015 at 4:43 pm. If we...

https://whatonomy.wordpress.com/2015/07/11/i-love-the-thought-of-coming-home-to-you-british-teachers-acknowledge-their-debt-to-simply-red

Towards a unified theory of negative capability. July 11, 2015. July 30, 2015. I Love The Thought of Coming Home To You: British teachers acknowledge their debt to Simply Red. Mick Hucknall and his cylinder of knowledge and skills. A round of applause and a toast for love. Ghost of Love by Simply Red. When the National Curriculum was launched (in a branch of Robert Dyas in the late 80’s) it was no coincidence that ‘Holding Back the Years’ was chosen as its theme tune. Many thought this a reference to...

Towards a unified theory of negative capability. February 4, 2014. October 23, 2014. Quality of life, prawns: the joys and perils of teaching abroad. Part 1: Going Rogue. It’s not edible. International teachers, back home from another stint abroad. What a tiresome bunch? They bleat on about prawns the size of your head and their 10-bedroom colonial mansion (deliberately omitting the fact that it’s in the no-man’s land of a border conflict between two Central African states). Taken from ‘The Road No...

Then we’ll breathe in the pages. Seeds that will not germinate. Your stubble pierces my cheek. Our tears mingling like globes of mercury. The pages in the grate. Do not kindle,. But curl in,. https://whatonomy.wordpress.com/2015/07/29/you-cant-hurry-understanding-im-trapped-in-a-beanbag-of-relativism

Towards a unified theory of negative capability. July 29, 2015. July 30, 2015. You Can’t Hurry Understanding: I’m trapped in a beanbag of relativism. Some teachers draw inspiration from pedagogical theorists. The rest of us? One month into my MA in Education. I used to think I was a teacher. Now I ‘know’ that I am a schizoid facilitator with controlling tendencies. (See, I can’t even say ‘know’ anymore without couching it in sarcastically hedge-betting speech marks.). To add insult to injury, I’ve discov...

https://whatonomy.wordpress.com/2014/10/22/put-some-oooh-in-your-rubric-how-to-write-a-writing-rubric

Towards a unified theory of negative capability. October 22, 2014. October 23, 2014. Put Some “Oooh” In Your Rubric? How to write a writing rubric. I have grown to love the word “rubric”. I love the way that it forces my mouth into a pout with the first syllable and then into a salesman’s smile with the second. Step 1: Know your standards. Step 2: Define your strands. As mentioned above, my four strands for all writing are: content, style, organisation and language. I settled on these after using UK ...

SC & LC | Having a look about

Having a look about. Chiang Mai, Pai and Koh Samet. By The Poet Tree. August 5th – August 22nd. It was, as ever, the food that we wanted to crack first, so we enrolled on a cooking class with a delightfully cheerful man called Sammy. Sammy was one of those perma-stoned characters who giggled uncontrollably all the time at fairly innocuous things like saying his name (haha! Or chopping some lemongrass (hehe! Or finding out that one of his class had chilli in her eye (teeheehee! On the fifth day we cycled ...

Songaday – I always have a song inside my head

I always have a song inside my head. 365: Chemical Brothers ft. Beck – Wide Open. December 31, 2015. 8216;some day love’s gonna hurt me’. I have finally finished this labour of love which has descended, rapidly, into a big old ballache. A song every day through 2013 and 2015 (2014 was missed out due to commitments to moving house and getting married). I now have two years worth of music with lots of memories associated with them, so that’s something. 364: Antibalas – Dirty Money. December 30, 2015. LCD S...

All things Stephen…. November 18, 2011 · 5:13 pm. Apples and Snakes: a spoken word community. This Wednesday I was able to attend a staff meeting for Apples and Snakes. 8220;England’s leading organisation for performance poetry and spoken word.” Apples and Snakes is an associate of Free Word. And is based over at The Albany. All ambitious endeavours for a relatively small organization. But what I found most impressive was their work with individual spoken word poets.
