The Dictionary of Musical Invective. Thoughts on music and modernity. All posts for the month September, 2012. New Music Is Boring Part One: The Tyranny of the Concert Hall. Here’s the State of the Union in one sentence:. We have no audience because our concerts are boring. All of these things and many others may well be true, but shifting the blame for the state of things to vast cultural currents we can’t control accomplishes nothing, and worse, places the onus for change conveniently outside of our pu...

The Dictionary of Musical Invective. Thoughts on music and modernity. The world of new music is broken. With few exceptions, we inhabit a pretty bleak landscape. Nobody comes to concerts. Nobody knows what we do. For the most part, nobody even knows that we’re doing it. A depressing number of people aren’t even aware that there are still living composers outside of the film industry (“You mean like Mozart? I think it’s safe to say this isn’t what anybody had in mind. Pictured: our adoring public. As it i...

The Dictionary of Musical Invective. Thoughts on music and modernity. New Music Is Boring Part One: The Tyranny of the Concert Hall. If you’re back after reading my first post, I’ll assume that I don’t need to keep hammering home the point the new music scene in America is a mess. I’d like for this blog to be a place where people who don’t want that to be the case can rationally discuss what we can do to fix it, and I think the first step in the process has to be addressing what in particular is wrong.

The Dictionary of Musical Invective. Thoughts on music and modernity. The Dictionary of Musical Invective is an ongoing exploration of what’s wrong with the music world and what can be done to fix it. It aims to generate discussion and recommendations surrounding the general decline of new art music as a viable means of expression and serves as a soapbox for it’s author to wax philosophical about his own observations of such. The title references Slonimsky’s famous. Lexicon of Musical Invective.

http://cereal-music.blogspot.com/2013_02_01_archive.html
Classical music for the post-hipster, in LA and beyond. Monday, February 11, 2013. How to win composing. One of the main reasons we all became composers is the thrill of competition. The hunt, the chase, the adrenaline rush, the sport of it all! The vibrant beauty of young lads, in the prime of youth, competing for the glory of being the best. We are lucky in that we have such a well formed and established competition circuit for the young composer to earn his chops on. Well being such an objective proce...

Cereal Music - The music of Ben Phelps: Golijov raises the level of people's ire
http://cereal-music.blogspot.com/2012/02/golijov-raises-peoples-ire-once-again.html
Classical music for the post-hipster, in LA and beyond. Tuesday, February 21, 2012. Golijov raises the level of people's ire. There is currently a "big" (in new music terms) controversy over Golijov. S perhaps less than honest use of others' music in his own. Now, you may recall I did a big blog post expounding on the virtues of his cello concerto Azul. So I thought I'd once again provide the links so you can hear for yourself what everybody is complaining about. Isn't it still awesome? Los Angeles, CA.

Classical music for the post-hipster, in LA and beyond. Thursday, June 28, 2012. On making a scene. Two anecdotes to set the stage:. The response: "we can't help you, you're our competition.". On the other hand, we the Los Angeles composer might stand back a second and ask if we deserve it. We might individually believe our music more than worthy to grace the baton of our boy wonder conductor, but who collectively do we hold up as the best we have to offer? So what do they got that we don't? Starting fro...

Classical music for the post-hipster, in LA and beyond. Saturday, June 11, 2011. If you're anything like me, first of all, good. But secondly, you've been waiting patiently for a chance to hear Osvaldo Golijov's. Again, ever since you first heard it at the Aspen Music Festival a couple years ago. Why would you want to hear this piece? Well I'm reporting, for those who may care, because you should, that you CAN hear it for yourself, right now, on something called the "internet." No, not thanks to some...

Classical music for the post-hipster, in LA and beyond. Monday, December 20, 2010. On having a schtick. Or how to brand yourself as an important classical musician. I wasted a good deal of time the other day watching videos of Glenn Gould. No, not wasted. Invested. Don't get me wrong, this man is an artiste. I use the French to show that I mean it. I show that I mean that I mean it by referring to French as " the. French.") Glenn Gould is a master. And like all great masters ,. He also has a great schtick.

Classical music for the post-hipster, in LA and beyond. Friday, September 30, 2011. Micro-blog post (it's about conductors). It was time for a blog post. I thought this would tie in with some of my previous irreverent comments on conductors. Of course I'm really good at ignoring conductors, especially while I'm counting rests. Musical ipod | It’s yours and mine; a caring sharing experience
I’ll get the ball rolling by talking about what I consider to be one of the best albums of the 21st Century. Primal Screams ‘Riot City Blues’ it’s an absolute classic. I reguarly listen to the whole album on my ipod. The track order is just right, more about the album later. You may just wish you had it, or the band had it. I’ve registered two band names today and could’ve done more, but it still leaves me wondering why the bands concerned haven’t taken them? Why don’t the bands get involved? Welcome to ...
