Musing, Opining and Criticising: June 2013

http://musingopiningandcriticising.blogspot.com/2013_06_01_archive.html

Musing, Opining and Criticising. Tuesday, 11 June 2013. Glass Mill leisure centre Lewisham - swimming review. Today was the second day that the new Glass Mill leisure centre on Loampit Vale in Lewisham has been open, and I went down this morning before work to have a swim. I was later than intended, so only got to do a few laps, but thought I'd write up on my experiences for others intending to head down. One development I did like was the huge clock on one of the longer walls of the building - this mean...

Musing, Opining and Criticising. Wednesday, 29 February 2012. Melodifestivalen 2012 - My Top 32. 1 På väg - Abalone Dots. A beautiful country ballad with tight harmonies, this was always going to be my favourite. And it even has a really well-executed key change too! 2 Why am I crying - Molly Sandén. Big emotional break-up ballad, with lovely thoughtful lyrics - just my thing! 3 The Girl - Charlotte Perrelli. See, I do like schlager sometimes! 4 Amazing - Danny Saucedo. 5 Euphoria - Loreen. 29 Land of Br...

Musing, Opining and Criticising: July 2012

http://musingopiningandcriticising.blogspot.com/2012_07_01_archive.html

Musing, Opining and Criticising. Sunday, 15 July 2012. Tiffany Porter - Plastic Brit? When Tiffany Porter broke the British record in the 100m hurdles in June 2011, the Daily Mail had a shit-fit. Here was an athlete from abroad, running for Britain under supposedly false pretences, taking the record, the glory and the opportunities from true British athletes. I hate to say it, but for once I think they kinda have a point. Aldama writes of her pain at being seen as 'not-British', since:. Tiffany Porter wa...

Musing, Opining and Criticising. Wednesday, 10 July 2013. An honest evaluation of my progress in Norwegian. It's now been about 18 months since I started learning Norwegian. Some periods of that time have been quite intensive, others have been much more passive and slow (read: lazy). After this weekend's trip to Norway, I wanted to think through my progress and evaluate honestly - and I summarise my thoughts in Norwegian below. Før meg, vanskeligste på norsk er å høre og forstå bra, og det er spesielt va...

Rowley Poly Bird: February 2012

http://rowleypolybird.blogspot.com/2012_02_01_archive.html

Wednesday, 22 February 2012. I will knit and wear a Scarf of Doom with pride. Deadly Knitshade is the sort of knitter all knitters want to be. She's a fab designer, a brilliant and clever writer, and she scrapes a living doing what we all love. Proper kudos! She also learned to knit - like so many others - when life was a bit shit. She appeared on BBC London news a few weeks ago (alongside the perfectly marvelous Aneeta Patel of Knitting SOS. I also have blue hair at the moment, blue hair is cool.) V...

Rowley Poly Bird: Nodavus!

http://rowleypolybird.blogspot.com/2012/07/nodavus.html

Friday, 6 July 2012. That's what a knitting spell would look like if I wrote Harry Potter.). Of course, even Molly Weasley doesn't have a knitting spell. That would take all the fun and the little imperfections out of handmade goodies. I've been crap at finishing Kirsty's Weasley Sweater but there's nothing like a broken leg to get the knitting juices going. So here's the finished object! I've also finished another sweater for Joshua. Unfortunately, it took a month so he's nearly grown out of it.

Thursday, 13 October 2011. The Royal Parks Half Marathon. I can't quite believe it, but I really did it! My time wasn't on target, but when the time came I decided to take part against medical advice, so I was just pleased to cross the finishing line at all. Maybe, just maybe, I'll do it again one day. Rowley Poly Bird: May 2013

http://rowleypolybird.blogspot.com/2013_05_01_archive.html

Saturday, 18 May 2013. I'm not at a party this weekend so me and Mrs. RowleyPolyBird are sitting at home liveblogging instead! I know next to nothing about this year's contest except that it's being held in Malmö, Sweden, Bonnie Tyler is representing the UK, and there's a lesbian kiss in the Finnish entry. I'm ready with some knitting and a bottle of my Swedish beverage of choice (Kopparberg strawberry and lime, thanks), and I'm surrounded by Ikea furniture. Allons-y! Would be a bit self-defeating if not!

Sunday, 1 January 2012. 1 Finish everything I have on the needles: Kirsty's Weasley Sweater. My Over the Rainbow shawl. I find it hard to keep working on things for myself, when there's so much pretty to make for other people! 2 Knit some overdue presents: something pretty for the Wife to replace the Mangyle. She never wears (and donated to C4WS), a green tea cosy for a friend at Seminary, and one for Mum and Dad to match their new kitchen, a Bloody Stupid Johnson. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

Rowley Poly Bird: I used a bus!

http://rowleypolybird.blogspot.com/2012/08/i-used-bus.html

Thursday, 2 August 2012. I used a bus! I had a clinic appointment in town today, but the clinic I was attending is on a main road. There are double yellow lines, and it's difficult to stop, so although I was able to get dropped off there by Mum I couldn't get a local taxi firm to come and pick me up. The nearest place I could be picked up within the town centre was a bus stop 0.2miles, 4 minutes away (according to Google Maps). It's not far, but up a steep hill and took me 20 minutes to walk there.

Monday, 16 July 2012. Learning from the wheelchair weekend. I have always tried to understand how hard it can be as a disabled person to deal with getting around day-to-day. The world doesn't make it easy; help is there but has to be specifically requested and the onus is on the traveller to calculate all the timings precisely. I've been aware of this for some time; I worked with disabled students at UCL and sat on the 'Committee for People with Disabilities'. Being dependent on taxis is really hard work...

Rowley Poly Bird: Navigating London in a wheelchair (part 2)

http://rowleypolybird.blogspot.com/2012/07/navigating-london-in-wheelchair-part-2.html

Sunday, 15 July 2012. Navigating London in a wheelchair (part 2). After yesterday, I suppose I should have predicted how tired I would feel waking up, but I underestimated by a long way! Muscles I'd forgotten even existed in my arms and my right (i.e. non-broken) leg were sore as soon as I woke, but I managed to wash, dress and get down to breakfast in the hotel this morning. I was astonished, however, that whilst I was eating breakfast, someone moved me out of their way! I was lucky again to have some f...

Thus, today, I would love to share with you a few reflections that I hope would help firm up our philosophy of discipleship. I believe these points are not exhaustive yet fundamental simple yet non-negotiable. First, we must ask ourselves: What is discipleship? What then is disciple-making? Why do we need to make disciples today? It is a mandate for all believers/followers of Jesus Christ. We grow wide in imp...
