My Arabic Mission

Helpful Posts for Jordan Study Abroad Students. Today I was a "guest speaker" in the Jordan Fall 2011 Study Abroad prep class. I am pretty sure I terrified everyone there with my story about language exhaustion and discouragement. Hopefully some of them will look at a few of my blog entries and know that not everything was bad! Anyway, even if none of them look at this, here are a few helpful entries about culture, things to do in Jordan, language learning, and other things. Hints for Sick Travelers.

My Arabic Mission: Weather

http://myarabicmission.blogspot.com/2008/07/weather.html

Amman has recently been blessed with a cool spell. So cool, in fact, that it is. Chilly, like Utah in the fall. Anyway, the break from the intense heat made me realize that I have never written a post about the weather here, which would be quite helpful if any of you are planning on living here or visiting in the summer, and might even be intersting for those of you who are not. Then again, it might not, but who chooses to read this thing? Is getting hotter every day. Secondly, the weather cools down qui...

My Arabic Mission: A Visit to an Arab Home

http://myarabicmission.blogspot.com/2008/05/visit-to-arab-home.html

A Visit to an Arab Home. After forgetting to get off in Hesban and riding all the way to Madaba, I called my friend Sawsan to tell her that we had arrived, but when she found out we were in Madaba she told me, “That is about half an hour from Hesban! This is quite normal in smaller towns.) Their house was surrounded by fields of olive trees, fruit trees, and other delectable things…and I think they said they have sheep and goat too. After sitting in the salon for about ten minutes and looking out on thei...

My Arabic Mission: Arab Greetings

http://myarabicmission.blogspot.com/2008/07/arab-greetings.html

Ok, enough with my hilarious adventures. It is time for some more information about Arabs and Arabic. Arab greetings are one thing that I kind of wish Americans would pick up- but in English, of course. When you greet someone, it is a sort of mini-contest to see who can say the most greetings the fastest. Where have you been? I haven't seen you in [2 days, or some sort of long period of time like that]! Have you been avoiding me? My personal favorite, and which Iraqis say- I always respond with "yellow").

My Arabic Mission: The Odd, The Creepy, and...Time

http://myarabicmission.blogspot.com/2008/07/odd-creepy-andtime.html

The Odd, The Creepy, and.Time. In the way of creepy:. In the way of odd. Have any of you ever tried vine leaves-flavored Lays? And in the way of time.I was reading a book in Arabic (recommended by my friend, but more than a little boring) entitled "262 ways to use your time wisely"- loosely translated. Imagine my surprise when, after reading page after page of Arabic, I ran into these strange English lines:. Just remember, "time is inclusti, we can not phase are use of it". My Arabic Mission: Museums of Folklore and Popular Culture

http://myarabicmission.blogspot.com/2010/07/museums-of-folklore-and-popular-culture.html

Museums of Folklore and Popular Culture. There are two small museums on either side of the amphitheater in downtown Amman. They are the Folklore Museum and the Museum of Popular Culture. And they are pretty cool. They are both quite small, so even if you aren't a museum person you can enjoy these and then go on to do something else. These are pictures from inside the small museum- I think all of these came from the Museum of Popular Culture/Tradition. Check out those ankle bracelets! That I have ever seen.

The Rarities and the Oddities: Wow

http://theraritiesandtheoddities.blogspot.com/2010/10/wow.html

The Rarities and the Oddities. Friday, October 22, 2010. Wow That is really all I can say about today. BYU campus was both a rarity and an oddity. First, I walked out of my class at noon when I heard cheers and shouts coming from the middle of the quad. See the two x's on the map in the center? The quad is the white x surrounded by grass in the middle of the map). I looked over and saw a wedding. Sorry about the pictures- I had to take them with my phone and then take a picture of my phone screen.).

Lame Is...: Next Time, I'll Just Fly

http://lameis.blogspot.com/2010/03/next-time-ill-just-fly.html

Sunday, March 28, 2010. Next Time, I'll Just Fly. Warning: This is a rather long story. To make it more convenient for your reading pleasure, I have subtitled sections of the story. To avoid boredom, consider reading one section a day for several days. It might make it more palatable. I have always liked road trips. A nice drive up to some remote place in Idaho, or down to Southern Utah.a chance to have time alone with yourself and time to think about life. Specifically my. Snow Storms.and Black Ice".

Lame Is...: "Free Car Wash"

http://lameis.blogspot.com/2010/06/free-car-wash.html

Tuesday, June 8, 2010. As a college student, I am very poor. Very. Poor This might have something to do with the ratio of countries I have lived in to the hourly wage I get paid at work, but in any case I find every way possible to go without spending money. For as long as possible. Were thinking as they saw this girl using the window cleaner to wash off her entire car, but I was thinking, "I just saved $5.". Hahaha, I remember you doing that! The Rarities and the Oddities: Police Beat

http://theraritiesandtheoddities.blogspot.com/2010/05/police-beat.html

The Rarities and the Oddities. Thursday, May 20, 2010. I think police beat is often very, very odd. Just thought I'd share a few gems. (Please notice these are all within a month! Feb 14: A concerned mother called because her 13-year-old daughter was threatening her with a stick. Officers responded and mediated the situation. These are from February 2010. The first post in over two years! Throwing away a human skull is a felony. Wow. I just.wow. I miss Police Beat. May 20, 2010 at 6:28 PM.

The Rarities and the Oddities: Favorite Movie at Taco Bell

http://theraritiesandtheoddities.blogspot.com/2010/07/favorite-movie-at-taco-bell.html

The Rarities and the Oddities. Friday, July 9, 2010. Favorite Movie at Taco Bell. So when you get your food from Taco Bell, they always ask for your name so they can call it when your food is ready. Well, most of the time, anyway. I think the employees get bored sometimes, because one time they asked what name and I said "Breanne." And the woman behind the counter said, "We're going to call you 'bright Breanne.'". I was ok with that. It must have been alliteration Tuesday. Of course, I said Amazing Grace.

The Rarities and the Oddities: duck crossing!

http://theraritiesandtheoddities.blogspot.com/2008/04/duck-crossing.html

The Rarities and the Oddities. Thursday, April 10, 2008. The other day, i had to slow my bike down as i was riding down the ramp south of campus. Now, ducks are neither a rarity nor an oddity on campus, but i have never seen them on the bike ramp south of campus. So i would definitely have to call this a rarity. i think the ducks are getting restless (they are just like students! Good thing, too, because i was starting to miss the deer. I am a duck. April 13, 2008 at 4:37 PM. The DU: a daily oddity.

Lame Is...: April 2010

http://lameis.blogspot.com/2010_04_01_archive.html

Monday, April 26, 2010. This post is one of many in honor of my dear car, Matilda. Matilda is an awesome car, really. She has given me more than I ever paid for her. My dear friend and roommate, Shayla, sold her to me for $250. Which might explain why she has so many problems. But just let me tell you that my dear car Matilda has passed inspection 3 years in a row now! The lock's broken like that. And the window, if you roll it down, doesn't roll back up. The window's broken like that. And shut the door.

Lame Is...: Sardines and...Staples

http://lameis.blogspot.com/2008/04/sardines-andstaples.html

Monday, April 21, 2008. Yesterday I drove place one of the places of my former employment (I think the fact that I have had. In the past three years definitely belongs on the blog of the lamities in my life.). Ahh, the good old Quickdown, where I was a "Down Payment Assitant Specialist," or a telemarketer that called loan officers. It was quite possibly my worst job yet. Many of the posts on this blog could come from that job alone. So much for my great spot). When everyone found me, I attempted to remov...
