WATCH – My Big Red Glasses
https://mybigredglasses.com/category/life/watch
My Big Red Glasses. Books, Veg Food, Animals…the important stuff. Short Movie, Documentary and TV Reviews. READ: Dept of Speculation by Jenny Ofill More. In a poetry class at college the professor told all of us that he only read poems because he was too old to read long novels. He said he could get the same impact in a few verses, so why spend days or weeks reading one book. I did not understand him then, but I think I do now. 8220;Dept of Speculation”. 8220;Dept of Speculation” reads like a writi...

My Big Red Glasses. Books, Veg Food, Animals…the important stuff. READ: The Secret History of Wonder Women by Jill Lepore. The RadioLab podcasts consistently amaze me. This week the episodes Fu-Go. Hidden truths are so much juicier and interesting than the sanitized versions of history most of us know. I loved the shocking, fun, and hilarious details in Jill Lepore’s book, “ The Secret History of Wonder Women. For a great fictionalized version of this). The book includes a fantastic collection of pho...

READ: We Are Not Ourselves by Matthew Thomas – My Big Red Glasses
https://mybigredglasses.com/2015/08/01/read-we-are-not-ourselves-by-matthew-thomas
My Big Red Glasses. Books, Veg Food, Animals…the important stuff. READ: We Are Not Ourselves by Matthew Thomas. 8220;We Are Not Ourselves” by Matthew Thomas sat on top of my bookshelf, untouched, for the last three months. The book was the last of a stack that I checked out 5 months ago at the UC San Diego library. I picked the book up last Friday after work, read the first page, and then proceeded to read all 600 pages of the book in less than 4 days. Unputdownable. Is it what we want? What is the goal?
Lydia Millet – My Big Red Glasses
https://mybigredglasses.com/tag/lydia-millet
My Big Red Glasses. Books, Veg Food, Animals…the important stuff. READ: Mermaids in Paradise by Lydia Millet. Which brings Oppenheimer, Fermi, and Szilard to the present day so they can see the monster that they created. Millet plays with the absurd in her novels, and they are all political, hilarious, and thought-provoking. In “Mermaids in Paradise”. 8220;I told her no favors, since Chip and I had passed beyond that phase. We were adults, I told her calmly, but firmly: when we attended a party we di...

Current fiction and nonfiction reviewed. Monday, July 27, 2015. The Master and Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov. Bulgakov saw war. He was sent to the front by the Red Cross just out of medical school in 1913, when he was twenty-two years old. The horror of that addiction is recalled in his short fictional monograph, Morphine. The Master and Margarita.

The Bowed Bookshelf: March 2015
http://thebowedbookshelf.blogspot.com/2015_03_01_archive.html
Current fiction and nonfiction reviewed. Tuesday, March 24, 2015. My Struggle Volume II by Karl Ove Knausgaard. We are almost finished with Volume Two of Knausgaard’s six-volume memoir before we learn what Knausgaard is about with this huge, unwieldy thing he calls a novel. Does that not mean that art is subjective, and in the eyes of the beholder only? Since reading Min Kamp Volume One. We must ask ourselves why we care. How much of this is fiction and does it matter? Karl Ove tells us he read his book ...

Current fiction and nonfiction reviewed. Wednesday, July 29, 2015. Blanche Passes Go by Barbara Neely. As a mystery, the novel works very well. The. Is guaranteed to blow you out of the water. As we begin, we imagine this novel might just be another opportunity to spend time with Blanche and hear her wisecracks on everything from real food to what men like. Nothing wrong with that! The following quote is classic Neely:. What parenting lost in intensity it picked up in worriation. The Blanche White series...

The Bowed Bookshelf: August 2015

Current fiction and nonfiction reviewed. Monday, August 24, 2015. The Complete Plays by Anton Chekhov, translated by Laurence Senelick. Chekov was an astoundingly prolific author, “publishing as many as one hundred and sixty-six stories between 1886 and 1887 while practicing medicine.” He’d been writing for magazines, newspapers, and periodicals since 1879 when he entered medical school, hoping to supplement his family’s meager income. By the author, but survived because Anton’s younger brother Mik...

Finishing up the lawn and landscaping for year, hopefully we won’t have to mow again but if it meant another couple weeks of nicer weather I’d take it. Things Not Yet Finished:. My Big Red Glasses – important stuff. mostly books.
My Big Red Glasses. Important stuff. mostly books. Year of the Bird. I remember being horrified that something so magnificent had ever been in danger. Shortly after witnessing that, I read Silent Spring by Rachel Carson ( I love this recent Jill Lepore article about her. And I’ve had a life-long, on-going, back-and-forth obsession in my head for the last 30 years about environmental and animal issues. Our collective human apathy amazes me. National Geographic and the Audubon declare this the Year of Bird.

Life will be a journey, perhaps not the journey you expected. Monday, September 13, 2010. A Poem In Memory. A View From Heaven. The day I went to heaven I knew that you would cry. But families are forever and our love will never die. Just know my love surrounds you; I'm just beyond the veil. My ship has headed home, ahead of you it sailed. You know I had a purpose and you have one as well. God's plan for us is his alone; one we cannot foretell. I hear you when you speak of me, I see your falling tears.
