Wednesday, August 5, 2009. Wednesday, August 5, Afro Caribbean Rhythms and Salsa Workshop. I was especially interested in the percussion aspects of this class. Most of the music I am familiar with has a basic bass line to it which is generally easy to pick up. With the music from this area, there seems to be several percussion lines with different bass tracks to it. This could provide research topics for music electives classes. Note the lizard on the brown mulch below, almost in the center of the picture.

Thursday, August 6, 2009. History of Education in Puerto Rico. After lunch we returned to campus and attended a 2 hour presentation on the history and current events in education in Puerto Rico. This was done by Dr. Naomi Vega (featured in the video.) Some of the more interesting facts from this class were that the entire island of Puerto Rico is only 3,500 square miles - 35 miles from north to south and 100 miles across west to east. EDUC 497 Puerto Rico. Tuesday, August 4, 2009. We left early today to visit El Yunque, the rain forest located about 1.5 hours from our university. El Yunque is part of the US Park Service system, and is a national forest. It is on the list of finalists for the New Seven Wonders of the World. The paths were windy and sometimes steep, but they were paved and therefore easy to walk. It was awesome to be inside the forest, to experience the sounds of nature, the greenery, the immense size of some trees.
