Puerto Rico Experience

Tuesday, August 11, 2009. Friday, August 7, 2009. Day 5 in Puerto Rico: El Morro. Today was our last full day in Puerto. Rico and we decided to take it easy. Originally we were to tour Ponce, but decided we would prefer to spend more time in Old San Juan and tour. I think we were all relieved about this change in plans as we were all exhausted, and I don't think we would have survived the two hour drive over the mountain while 14 of us squeezed. Into one van. El Morro. Is the oldest fort in Puerto. One o...

EDUC 497 Puerto Rico: Reflections on the Pride of the People

http://lcheezpr.blogspot.com/2009/08/reflections-of-pride-of-people.html

EDUC 497 Puerto Rico. Friday, August 7, 2009. Reflections on the Pride of the People. It was extremely evident that the people of Puerto Rico take great pride in their identity. They are Puerto Rican, not Hispanic, not Latino, and would not check those two choices on the census. They take great pride in displaying the flag of Puerto Rico, and we saw it often in our travels. Saturday, August 8, 2009 at 9:14:00 AM EDT. Going along with your comment about how prideful they are with their identity, I find it...

http://wjkpuertorico09.blogspot.com/2009/08/day-2-history-culture-politics.html

Monday, August 3, 2009. Monday, August 3 - History / Culture / Politics. After Spanish class, we had the pleasure of having Dr. Ignacio Olazagasti speak to us about the history, culture, and politics of Puerto Rico. Briefly, he divided up the history of the island into 4 major time eras:. 1 1917 - current. 2 1898 - 1916 - the U.S. period. 3 1493 - 1897 - the Spanish period. 4 5000 B.C. - 1492 - the Indian period. Ignacio spoke about identity and ethnicity in general and the 4 factors that make up culture:.

wjkellypuertorico09: Wednesday, August 5, Afro Caribbean Rhythms & Salsa Workshop

http://wjkpuertorico09.blogspot.com/2009/08/wednesday-august-5-afro-caribbean.html

Wednesday, August 5, 2009. Wednesday, August 5, Afro Caribbean Rhythms and Salsa Workshop. I was especially interested in the percussion aspects of this class. Most of the music I am familiar with has a basic bass line to it which is generally easy to pick up. With the music from this area, there seems to be several percussion lines with different bass tracks to it. This could provide research topics for music electives classes. Note the lizard on the brown mulch below, almost in the center of the picture.

wjkellypuertorico09: History of Education in Puerto Rico

http://wjkpuertorico09.blogspot.com/2009/08/history-of-education-in-puerto-rico.html

Thursday, August 6, 2009. History of Education in Puerto Rico. After lunch we returned to campus and attended a 2 hour presentation on the history and current events in education in Puerto Rico. This was done by Dr. Naomi Vega (featured in the video.) Some of the more interesting facts from this class were that the entire island of Puerto Rico is only 3,500 square miles - 35 miles from north to south and 100 miles across west to east. Some interesting numbers Dr. Vega showed us were:. Students = 517,113.

EDUC 497 Puerto Rico: Day Two

http://lcheezpr.blogspot.com/2009/08/day-two.html

EDUC 497 Puerto Rico. Tuesday, August 4, 2009. We left early today to visit El Yunque, the rain forest located about 1.5 hours from our university. El Yunque is part of the US Park Service system, and is a national forest. It is on the list of finalists for the New Seven Wonders of the World. The paths were windy and sometimes steep, but they were paved and therefore easy to walk. It was awesome to be inside the forest, to experience the sounds of nature, the greenery, the immense size of some trees.
