Chickens and Roosters on the loose! Pictures from Key West Florida

Key West is famous for its wandering chickens and roosters. They can be found roaming the streets, dodging traffic, wandering into stores and restaurants, and crowing way too early in the morning. Why all the wandering fowl? I asked several people and got several colorful answers. The best (and cleanest! Answer I could get was that they are supposedly descended from fowl brought to the island by Cuban and Bahamian settlers for food.They were also trained as fighting cocks.

This is a great place to visit! I went to Hemingway's home while staying in Key West Florida in August 2003. There are guided tours and you can also simply wander around the house and grounds on your own. The house is built of 18 inch thick stone. It has always withstood even the worst hurricanes. I've been on two boat trips on the intercoastal waterway. One was a dinner cruise and the other was a couple hour party from a trade show I was attending. I've been to Hollywood Florida a couple of times to attend trade shows in the area. I do like that area much better than Ft. Lauderdale, it's much less crowded. It's convenient to get to, if you fly in to Ft. Lauderdale, it's only a 15 minute drive right down Route 1 to Hollywood. I think it's about a half hour drive if you fly into Miami.
