Recharging the pianist | fugues + distractions
https://rubenoid.wordpress.com/2009/07/20/recharging-the-pianist
July 20, 2009. In the past ten years or so since graduate school, my piano playing has been almost purely utilitarian — playing for shows and operas, accompanying recitals and juries, some recording, and other small performance things. Then I started at the church — where I have to churn out pieces week after week which, by necessity, are never terribly challenging. Toccata in G Major. Sonata in C Minor (“Pathétique”). This Toccata has a exhilirating 3-part fugue that I’m itching to get into. On the facu...

November 23, 2009. This weekend I had two great — if not wildly different — concert experiences: Peaches. The last time I saw Peaches she only had two CDs to her name, “The Teaches of Peaches” and “Fatherfucker”. By this time around, she had two more, “Impeach My Bush” and “I Feel Cream”. Her music has gotten somewhat more sophisticated in that she dabbles (quite well) into different styles, but she’s still the dirty old cougar she always was. An den Wassern zu Babel. By Frode Fjellheim and with the Milw...

December music | fugues + distractions
https://rubenoid.wordpress.com/2009/12/28/december-music
December 28, 2009. I survived another Very Unitarian December. This one was more manageable than previous years since we didn’t have a service specifically about Hanukkah, and we did Winter Solstice as a Sunday morning service (and not Monday evening, when it really occurs). December 13 was the annual Holiday Music Service, which we called “Lights of Wholeness, Lights of Peace.” Here’s the line-up:. Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring. JS Bach (piano solo). People, Look East. Lovely is the Dark Blue Sky. There w...

38 hours — done! July 20, 2009. Wow, that did not last long! I took a nap after my last post and woke up feeling light-headed and preoccupied with food. What put me over the edge was seeing the cat eating. For some odd reason I decided that it was also time for me to eat. Ah well, no judgment! Leave a Reply Cancel reply. Enter your comment here. New additions to the CD library. May 11, 2009. I’ve recently added eight new CDs to my collection:. I purchased this CD after hearing several tracks on NPR’s World Cafe. This is beautiful, strange, hypnotic, quirky music and I find myself loving it for the same reasons I love the music of Bjork and Radiohead. This is her fifth CD and I feel cheated that I haven’t discovered her sooner. I’ll be completing my collection soon. Sounds of the Universe. Sounds of the Universe: B. I Feel Cream: A. 3 CDs —.

August 20, 2008. I was recently encouraged by my non-profit employer to start using GoodSearch. At work instead of Google. GoodSearch is a search engine powered by Yahoo! With half of the revenue generated by advertisers going to a charitable organization of the user’s choice; in my case, my employer. This would be an excellent idea, except I don’t like Yahoo! A composer of liturgical Jewish music, had Wal-Mart as one of its top five results. I mean, really. This should resonate deeply and favorably with...

A Summer of Memoirs. September 18, 2008. I have read, by chance, quite a few memoirs this summer. It seems I enjoy the escape from the craziness of my life by living vicariously through other people’s crazy lives. Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim. Audiobook) and (updated 10/07/08). When You Are Engulfed in Flames. Is not his best collection, but it is funny nevertheless — perfect bathtub reading. I have read. Several times and listened to it for the first time a couple of months ago. Boylan is tot...
