Uncommon Dissent

Tuesday, April 28, 2015. I Am Sad Today. It's a beautiful day in Kentucky. The Sun has been out and the landscape is lush and green. I managed to successfully organize all of my documentation for work today in a new R package that should make a very smooth process for compiling our required reports. And I got to run around the back yard with the girls and play board games with Julie. It really seems like the perfect day. But I am sad. Are we celebrating this? Even when it is justified, it is wrong. The a...

Uncommon Dissent: The First Time in Ten Years

http://www.myuncommondissent.blogspot.com/2014/11/the-first-time-in-ten-years.html

Wednesday, November 26, 2014. The First Time in Ten Years. It won't happen this year, though. My streak is over. There is a game happening. I just won't go. I'm not going because the email invitation sent to my congregation's men's group read, " Be there. or consider attending the relief society [the women's group] next Sunday.". I'm not going because the use of this stereotype is inappropriate and offensive. I see the same action in the wording of the football invitation; I don't believe there is any ma...

Uncommon Dissent: July 2014

http://www.myuncommondissent.blogspot.com/2014_07_01_archive.html

Wednesday, July 2, 2014. Would you believe me if I told you I used to be an opinionated jack-ass? Well, you shouldn't- the tense of that sentence is wrong. I'm still an opinionated jack-ass. Fortunately, I'm not quite as extreme as I used to be. It didn't really hold her interest. By the time we made it to Temple Square, she was more interested in running up and down the sidewalks, admiring the flowers, and trying to play in the fountains. Pretty much anything we showed her would hold her interes...To fi...

Uncommon Dissent: Advent and Anticipation: Hastening the Lord's Return

http://www.myuncommondissent.blogspot.com/2014/12/advent-and-anticipation-hastening-lords.html

Tuesday, December 16, 2014. Advent and Anticipation: Hastening the Lord's Return. I had a plan. It was a good plan, too. This would be a Christmas celebration for my congregation like we'd never had. We've still never had it. When I was asked to plan our ward's Christmas party, I had this crazy idea to extend the celebrations beyond just one single night. Why not celebrate for a whole month! Psalm 80:1-7, 16-18. Psalm 85:12, 8-13. Isaiah 61:1-4, 8-11. John 1:6-8, 19-28. More specifically, about how the w...

Uncommon Dissent: October 2014

http://www.myuncommondissent.blogspot.com/2014_10_01_archive.html

Monday, October 27, 2014. Those Things I Don't Believe. As you may have noticed, I'm an evidence-based kind of guy. I like data, and I like a well reasoned and justifiable logic. This is certainly influenced by my professional career, but I like to think that it confirms well to the whole gentleness, meekness, and persuasion thing (would you like fries with your justification? Wouldn't the elevation change cause asphyxiation? The apologists' answers became more and more implausible. Evolution was another...

Holiday Blahs →. 22 November, 2013. I’ve come to understand that there is this dichotomy of experiences that I’ve been having and it’s been interesting, thought provoking and most of all, weird. My thought process began after I read the book Falling to Heaven by James Ferrell. In his book, he talks. I sat down with my stake president an...

For the last many months, I’ve been searching for some definition of what my faith is, and. Well, I found the source: frustration. Why did I have this feeling to be so hard on this person? What possessed me to call this person to repentance when it was nowhere near the realm of my place to do so? Cliquish pe...

I dislike the holidays something fierce! Don’t worry, this posting will get better but I’m going to admit to a character weakness. So the bottom line is that I hate being alone during the holiday season, but I’d rather be by myself. I was just there and I’m burning a lot of fuel driving around, besides, what for?

Nutter Stuff: November 2013

http://nutterstuff.blogspot.com/2013_11_01_archive.html

Monday, November 18, 2013. Happy birthday two you! Two years ago right now, I was sitting up in bed, trying to flex my toes. They were starting to regain feeling, but were tingly, and my legs heavy. Two years ago right now, I was frustrated at my inability to clear my throat, due to a lack of functional abdominal muscles. Two years ago right now, the spinal from my C-section was wearing off. Two years ago right now, I was holding my new baby, loving on her, and loving her name. I relished that, from the ...

Monday, April 8, 2013. Fall 2012 photo dump. Robyn was blessed and we went to the Great Lakes Science Center. Both over Labor Day weekend. We visited the Greater Cleveland Aquarium. A few times, including on International Talk Like A Pirate Day. Benjamin even came with us once. Julie started preschool. The "real" kind, not the mom-run kind. Julie also did soccer, which entailed sitting and crying on my or Ben's laps for an hour because other kids didn't let her get the ball. Robyn in her blessing dress.
