CubeSat: Laser Communication

Data Transfer for a CubeSat. For this project, we will develop a proof of concept transmitter (a laser with pointing actuator) and receiver (a webcam/lens setup). The transmitter and receiver will be able to establish a laser communication link without exact information on each other's current location and orientation. A large portion of the project will go into comparing different methods of controlling and driving the cooler, particularly in the area of power efficiency. Electron Optics for an X-ray Source

For a Modulated X-ray Source. This project for the summer 2011 Olin-NASA Research Group is the continuation of the development of the Modulated X-Ray Source (MXS) as a means of using X-Rays for communication. In order to focus the X-Ray beam, the electron beam within the MXS must be focused. Our task is to develop a lens that will focus the electrons so that a more useful and more focused beam of X-Rays will be emmitted from the MXS.

We will couple a high speed digital RS232 communication infrastructure to the MXS transceiver. Our system will drive a 255 nm UV LED with 20 mA (and the capability of driving 10 parallel LEDs with 200 mA), and will filter and amplify the output of the x-ray transceiver. Our goal is to snip the RS232 line in half, and bridge the gap with a wireless x-ray transceiver.
