조정래 작가의 대하소설, '태백산맥' 속 '남도여관'이란 이름으로 더 친숙한 '보성여관'은 소설에서처럼 해방 이후부터 한국 전쟁까지의 시대적 상황을 기억하는 근현대 삶의 현장이며, 역사적으로 중요한 기억의 장소이다. 소설의 배경이 되었던 그 시절, 이 건물은 여관이었고, 그때의 실제 상호는 '보성여관'이었다. 당시 교통의 중심지였던 벌교는 일본인의 왕래가 잦아지며 유동인구가 증가했고, 그 역사의 중심에 있던 '보성여관'은 당시의 5성급 호텔을 방불케 할 정도의 규모였다고 한다. 근현대 벌교의 역사문화환경을 형성하는 중요한 거점으로서의 역할을 했던 '보성여관'은 2004년 역사 및 건축사적 가치를 인정받아 등록문화재 제132호로 지정되었다. 시대를 초월한 국민 소설로 꾸준히 인기를 끌고 있는 조정래 작가의 대하소설 '태백산맥'의 주 무대인 '태백산맥 문학거리'는 벌교우체국, 벌교읍사무소, 금융조합 등 소설 태백산맥에 등장하는 시설물이 현존하고 있어 문학인과 관광객들이 자주 찾는 문학기행로이다.

소재지 : 벌교읍 회정리 357-2. 2007년 문학관 건물 준공 2008년 개관. 지상 2층으로 세워진 태백산맥 문학관은 태백산맥을 형상화한 건물이다. 작가의 육필원고와 증여작품 등 총 144건, 623점의 전시물품을 보유한 국내에서 가장 큰 규모의 '작품 전시관'이다. 소재지 : 벌교읍 회정리 357-2. 태백산맥의 첫 장면이 묘사된 곳으로 1939년에 건축 된 제각과 별장이다. 한옥을 기본으로 곳곳에 일본식을 가미한 이색적 건물로서 본래 밀양 박씨문중의 소유였으나 2002년 보성군에 기부체납 되었다. 문간채에 2층의 누각이 서 있어 소설에서는 현부자가 이 누각에 올라 앉아 기생들과 함께 풍류를 즐기면서 자기 소유의 농토를 내려다 보는 것으로 그려졌다. 소재지 : 벌교읍 회정리(현부자네 집 앞). 2007년 복원 건립. 소설 속 현부자네 전속무당인 월녀와 딸 소화가 살았던 집으로 그리면서, 소화를 통해 봉건사회의 폐해를 고발하고 있다. 옛 벌교교회 : 회정리교회(현 대광어린이집). 원래 지역 대...
