http://natureitems.blogspot.com/2006/10/do-frogs-adapt-their-colouration.html

A nature study of the Esperance region of Western Australia. Saturday, October 28, 2006. Do frogs adapt their colouration? Do frogs adapt their colouration to suit their habitat, or are there micro-evolutionary processes at work? Below is a typical Slender Tree Frog, note the slender body with a tapering head. Also the pronounced dark stripe, extending through the eye to the lower flanks, as these are the more obvious features for quick identification. Slender Tree Frog, Litoria adelaidensis. Note the gr...

A nature study of the Esperance region of Western Australia. Saturday, March 03, 2007. Litoria cyclorhyncha, one big happy frog. The Spotted-thighed Frog is friendly and always ready for a goodtime. In an earlier post I featured the Moaning Frog "8. How did the Moaning Frog get its name? Http:/ natureitems.blogspot.com/2006/11/how-did-moaning-frog-get-its-name.html. And illustrated the pitfalls of their stressful life. However with the Spotted-thighed Frog, the situation is fortunately reversed. When the...

Esperance Blog: Esperance Hakeas

http://natureitems.blogspot.com/2007/07/31-esperance-hakeas.html

A nature study of the Esperance region of Western Australia. Sunday, July 22, 2007. Very hardy with attractive flowers, interesting foliage and sculptured growth habits. A common misconception is that all hakeas have sharp prickly foliage. This is certainly true with a number of species, but many have flat blunt leaves and even some with needle-like foliage, are quite soft to touch. So there is considerable variation. Below is probably the best known and widely grown Hakea, ie Hakea laurina or the Pincus...

http://natureitems.blogspot.com/2008/03/36-western-banjo-frog-limnodynastes.html

A nature study of the Esperance region of Western Australia. Saturday, March 01, 2008. Western Banjo Frog, Limnodynastes dorsalis. The best known burrowing frog. Once heard, never forgotten. Western Banjo Frog, Limnodynastes dorsalis. A bandit-looking western banjo frog - also note the raised thigh glands. I don't think he saw me". Probably the most extreme color variation of the banjo frog, but look at the sandy background. T the other extreme, these banjo frogs do not get much darker. We have been in d...

Lepidoptera Diary: May 2009

http://lepidopteradiary.blogspot.com/2009_05_01_archive.html

Butterflies, Moths plus other invertebrates found in my garden at Great Western, Victoria. Australia. Tuesday, 26 May 2009. Well, I think this moth is Oxycanus antipoda! Hepialids can be quite difficult to correctly identify without the beneift of years of experience and in some cases, a microscope! I was unable to be of much use to Denis. When he called for identification assistance recently, but I guess that is part and parcel of the mothing game! We are learning together. Click images to enlarge).

It's A Long Time Gone

It's A Long Time Gone. Not a conventional environmentalist. Friday, 7 August 2015. Green Woodpeckers And Wild Rabbits. Nothing prepared me for the last year though. My love of nature from my early days had never left me but I'd been starved of contact with anything more than some urban foxes (gorgeous and beguiling though they were! And last summer there was a common lizard burrow just across the road from the end of our lane (plus a toad that lived in our shed! Sunday, 27 June 2010. More coverage can be.
