Reflections on the Art of Living. We lived in Orange County, California when we were first married and sometimes looked for a home in that area. Mind, we never once knowingly walked into a home we couldn’t afford (lookie-loos, realtors call that), which is not to say that we were never in a house beyond our means. Pretty pricey area! We found work and a nice townhome to rent and began to itch for a home all our own, maybe something of stone with high walls round it! In 1992 we went to Tucson for our 16.

Reflections on the Art of Living. I recently came across a rather interesting blog in which the author decried those companies who think of their employees as human capital because, as he wrote,. What term do you suppose those who send jobs to China have for the poor peasants who ultimately do that work? Those workers are paid, on average 42 per hour and work an average of 60 hours a week in conditions so terrible that in one of the plants the leading cause of employee turnover is suicide! I worked at a ...

The Biblical Threescore and Ten | Thinking About It

Reflections on the Art of Living. The Biblical Threescore and Ten. The days of our years are threescore years and ten. Psalm 90:10. What would they think of next? Well, as it turns out, we now have three computers, two cell phones, and a TV cable box that have filled that role quite nicely, to such an extent, really, that when AT&T pulled the plug on the Time-of-Day service, it no longer even mattered. At the moment I am still much too busy with my many woodworking projects to start shuffling, but even w...

Reflections on the Art of Living. Thoughts on Viewing “Before Midnight”. Try a Little Tenderness. Jesse and Céline had it all in the beginning. What the hell happened? Most longtime married couples, quite a few of whom have had similar experiences, would retort that life has intervened. But we happy few who have been blessed with truly happy marriages (we’re approaching our 37. You can work through that litany rather rapidly. He was no support to her in her work, and she frankly resented his success beca...

Reflections on the Art of Living. Ldquo; All Our Bags Are Packed”. I have always been very driven to create, which is surely why my woodworking projects have such a tendency to take on a life of their own. They’re much too complex at times, but my modus operandi has never changed. First I make drawings of what I want to do for a project. Then I go about figuring out how in the hell I’m going to pull that off! When we consider what, to use the words of the catechism, is the chief end of man, and what are t...

Reflections on the Art of Living. Soggy, Soggy Night. Last Saturday we had one of the damnedest evenings I believe we’ve ever had, but for all the emotions of the evening, it had a most innocuous beginning. That afternoon I had brought home a newly repaired CD player, and we wanted to put it through its paces, to see if the repairs were worth the expense. But for me it was just a patient waiting. I made my decision that first night; I was simply waiting for her to catch up to me. Design by Dan Engler.

Reflections on the Art of Living. I don’t really feel like the Greek tonight, Joe. It was certainly not the first time she’s changed her mind about an evening’s plans, and with the past as prologue, it most assuredly won’t be the last. This. Like I said, it really disappointed me. She wanted to go someplace nearby for a burger and a beer, which is what we ended up doing, but man! She got me a scrub brush for the shower and a bunch of new socks, which is pretty pedestrian when you think about it, but she ...

Reflections on the Art of Living. New Year’s Eve 2014. Reading that quote for the first time was an epiphany. I knew at once that he was talking to me. I’ve been a couplet out of rhyme my entire life, never really in tune with my companions and especially not with other students, other people, the general population. I march to my own drummer, always have, but Thoreau gave me permission to do so. Happy New Year, All! On December 31, 2014 Comments (0). Joe Dusel’s Personal Blog. Design by Dan Engler.

Reflections on the Art of Living. The Joy of Work. And here’s the coup de grâce. Once the project is finished, no one will pay the slightest bit of attention to these shelves as you see them here because they will not see them. Oh, you’ll see them when you roll out the shelves to retrieve or store a bottle of wine, but really now, who stops to admire slats that have been placed just so? Who will even care about the configuration of these shelves, other than him who made them? The First of Forty Carats.
