The person who is in the process of recovery from addiction, substance abuse or mental illness often faces special challenges meeting basic needs. Just as it is difficult to concentrate and do well in school when a child is hungry despite having an excellent teacher, it is difficult to move toward wellness when one has a behavioral health problem without a place to live or other basic needs met despite having an excellent doctor. These services are often the gate to other levels of care or can actually prevent problems in mental health, substance abuse or addiction. Informational services require the least amount of infrastructure within communities and organizations, and can be tailored to fit the needs of a variety of audiences. The clinical area of the service pyramid the most complicated to enter. Licensure or certification for professionals is required at all levels of clinical behavioral health treatment. In addition, state and federal regulations and national accreditation standards guide the nature of behavioral health service delivery.
