Science etc by a NeuroPsych. Why the stupid think they’re smart. December 2, 2013. This is a lovely explanation of what I’m studying for my PhD, except I’m looking at patients and their knowledge and awareness of illness….but its basically the same thing! Psychologists have shown humans are poor judges of their own abilities, from sense of humour to grammar. Those worst at it are the worst judges of all. You’re pretty smart right? Science etc by a NeuroPsych. Monthly Archives: September 2014. The finish line is in sight…. September 16, 2014. I’m close enough to the finish line of the mighty PhD to know I’m nearly done, but still have a fair way to go. There’s no secret in the fact that writing a PhD thesis is possibly the hardest thing anyone will have to do…mentally. I have completed my first FULL DRAFT. My conclusions have been drawn, all my references have been. I’ve scoured the manuscript more times that I care to admit ...

NerderyCraftery on Etsy | Catriona Smith
https://catrionasmith.wordpress.com/2015/01/24/nerderycraftery-on-etsy
Science, Nerdery and Crafting. January 24, 2015. I’m ridiculously excited to have started up an Etsy shop. To sell some of my crafts – geeky jewellery and accessories inspired by science, TV shows and video games. As well as hopefully getting to share some of my crafts with like-minded people, it will contribute significantly towards mitigating the inevitable catastrophic hoarding that presents as a side effect of crafting more jewellery than I can justify owning/wear in a single lifetime! Minecraft Christmas Decorations | Catriona Smith

Science, Nerdery and Crafting. November 24, 2013. The other night, I picked up some of my little boy’s Hama beads and absent-mindedly arranged them on the board in a Minecraft skeleton face. Innocent enough, right? But then things kind of got out of hand. I thought that I could make little block skeleton heads if I slotted together the sides just right with the help of my trusty glue gun and then I decided that it’d be cute to lace a ribbon through the top to make it into a Christmas tree decoration.

Science, Nerdery and Crafting. Doctor Who Dalek Costume. November 23, 2013. With the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who, it seems appropriate to document my adventures with the glue gun in creating a Dalek costume for Halloween last year. I have fond memories of hiding behind sofa cushions, watching old episodes of Doctor Who with my dad when I was an underdeveloped human thing! A work in progress…. Once the paint had dried, I decided on spacing and started hot-gluing the pieces onto the skirt. Enter your co...

Science, Nerdery and Crafting. Rediscovering Sculpey : Quinn LoL sculpture. January 9, 2015. Forever, but I finally found some time and inspiration for a creative project last month. My boyfriend and his brother both play League of Legends together and last year I tried my hand at glass etching to make a pair of glasses, which I posted about. Meet Quinn: a progressive (and not under-dressed) female champion-of-choice for my proxy-brother. When I was a kid, I used to love making all kinds of things with S...

Science, Nerdery and Crafting. League of Glass Etching. December 7, 2013. I decided to try my hand at some glass etching to make a unique birthday gift for my boy. He plays the online multiplayer game, League of Legends, and while he doesn’t really main any one particular champion, his favourite is Jayce. Piltover’s debonaire, hammer-wielding engineer. Credit here, but not. So I opted for the gear symbol that he has on the hammer, chest-plate and dapper-as-heck shoulder-pads. I could see my design throug...

Science, Nerdery and Crafting. We’re All Mad Here…. March 4, 2014. It seems that today, social media exploded with an article about the ‘ culture of acceptance around mental health issues in academia’. At least, the little niche corner of social media that I occupy… which is populated mostly by other postgraduate students studying in a bioscience-related field, and that says something in itself. 8220;Piled Higher and Deeper” by Jorge Cham http:/ www.phdcomics.com. January 12, 2015. Causality in fMRI research. 1) Secondly, once regions are defined, we would like to infer from the data how much information is transmitted between these regions. This problem boils down to rendering pairwise. Between regions. If we picture the network as a graph, we can also call brain regions ‘nodes’ in this context, because the problem of causality in fMRI reduces to finding the right edges between the nodes representing brain regions. Of the first. Pearl points out that we do no...
