Wednesday, July 23, 2014. August 20, 2014. We read from Lamentation 3:. 17 Peace has been stripped away,. And I have forgotten what prosperity is. 18 I cry out, “My splendor is gone! Everything I had hoped for from the Lord is lost! 19 The thought of my suffering and homelessness. Is bitter beyond words. 20 I will never forget this awful time,. As I grieve over my loss. 21 Yet I still dare to hope. When I remember this:. 22 The faithful love of the Lord never ends! His mercies never cease. Then I asked s...

skagit county women's jail blog: May 2012

Friday, May 11, 2012. May 6, 2012. Last week's study was on Luke 5:18-25. Bethany, myself, and the women gathered in a circle and each took a turn reading one verse of the passage out loud. This story speaks of Faith, Forgiveness, and Friends. Three components we all need in our lives. I experimented with role play and a prayer activation idea. This encouraged the other women also to sit in the invitation seat and feel a touch from Jesus. And what do you want to let go of? It was a good day! A ministry o...

Saturday, August 11, 2012. Take my yoke upon you. August 5, 2012. One of the first things that Crystal, a twenty-something Latina girl, asked me when the ladies shuffled into the room in their red scrubs and plastic sandals was, "So were people praying for me last week? I said yes, we sent out their requests to all of you. She said, "Good, I'm going to check up on that every week because I really need it". Your prayers are coveted and checked up on! What weighs you down and makes you tired? Rest for our ...

Wednesday, August 7, 2013. Treated like a criminal. The tragedy of our broken immigration system was shoved in my face again this week: as the father of one of the families I’m closest to was picked up again by immigration. 8217; My heart raced, as I replied in affirmation. Feeling myself like a criminal, and yet not having done anything wrong. They continued with a very nerve-wracking ‘field interview’, as I sought to be honest and careful. I’ve had friends tell me these officials have followed th...

Tuesday, August 19, 2014. Waters of Baptism and the last weeks at Tierra Nueva. Today was my last staff meeting.it feels quite surreal! Although I will still come to our worship services and be around some, it will definitely be sad and a huge transition to not be staff anymore. As I finish up my last weeks at Tierra Nueva, I wanted to share some of the recent happenings. One of the women I've spent a lot of time with over the years, chose to get baptized a couple of weekends ago! As she stood in the wat...

Last year, God answered our prayer in beautiful and unexpected ways, bringing people to fill exactly the roles we were hoping, and more! God spoke to Julio. And click on 'Get Involved'. O Holy Night' had a new ring to it this year for me as I sang it with others during Christmas at Freeset*, nearby one of the largest red-light districts in Kolkata. Truly he taught us to love one another,. His law is love and His gospel is peace. Chains shall He break, for the slave is our brother,. And in His name all oppression shall cease.". My involvement with these organizations has included:. If you haven't watched the Freeset video ye...

skagit county women's jail blog: lament
http://skagitwomensjail.blogspot.com/2013/12/lament.html
Sunday, December 15, 2013. December 8, 2013. It's cold outside. The women of Skagit County jail were grateful to be allowed to take their blankets into the concrete outdoor pen for "rec" (recreation). The temperature is below freezing, but they wouldn't miss their one chance per day for fresh air. And then they come inside into the multi-purpose room, where Anne and I are waiting. Anne finishes playing, and the women quietly open their eyes. My kids," the woman on my right says, and she begins to cry.

skagit county women's jail blog: December 2011

Friday, December 23, 2011. Waiting . . . December 18, 2011. How can the time of 'waiting' in jail, be a hope-filled 'full' sense of expectant waiting instead of a hollow and depressing biding of time? As we come closer and closer to Christmas, I couldn't help thinking about the hopeful and terrifying expectation Mary must have had as she neared her 'due date'. With a number of pregnant women around me right now, some in jail, I began. How many of you have been pregnant? She's holy, the mother of Jesus.
