A brand has to be a simple and clear design that’s easy to tell apart from all the other brands. It also needs to be easy to describe, so that people can explain what to look for if a pony is missing or injured. If a pony gets sold the new owner has to add their brand behind the original one. Some ponies can get several brands that way.

Almost every week one or more animals gets killed on the Forest roads. The worst are the hit-and-run accidents, where badly hurt animals are left to suffer, possibly wandering for days in pain before they are noticed. Pigs would cause too much damage if they were on the Forest all year, so they’re only allowed out in autumn, when their job is to eat acorns. In the past keepers would kill crows, magpies, rooks and other animals that were considered to be vermin. Every keeper would have their own area to patrol, known as their beat, and would strictly enforce the rules. Another job of the keepers is to stop poaching and vandalism, both of which are still problems in the Forest today.

Come and try Morris Dancing at our taster evenings on Tuesday October 17th or 24th 2017 at 8:30pm. We meet in the Stanley's Own Scout Hut, Romsey Road, Copythorne. Musicians and Dancers Welcome. The New Forest Meddlars is a mixed Morris dance side, formed in 1990 and based in Lyndhurst in the New Forest.
