Newfoundland by Kayak

Tuesday, 2 August 2016. June 25th was a second attempt to go from Middle Cove to Flatrock. But first things first. back on Nov 29th, 2015, Brian, me, Shane and Dean set our destination for Flatrock in the wintry active waters of Middle Cove. Gerard came by and said no way, as the beach had dumping waves, the water was very active and would be bigger as we went out, and there was weather in the distance. and me and Shane were eager newbies that would probably need rescuing. A few more pix of that day:.

https://newfoundlandbykayak.blogspot.com/2016/08/its-rikki-time.html

Tuesday, 2 August 2016. Tuesday, June 14th, my new 'man' arrived :) there were lots of jokes and almost a shower put off for the waiting of the arrival of my new Tempest 165 Pro. Fiberglass beauty! So shiny and bright and gorgeous! I waited more than 2 months and made a great friend in Don Clarke at Outfitters, who never gave up during this crazy process to get Rikki here! Pete had the inspection done and the guys loaded Rikki on my car . Tony captured the event ( click here. Roll and all :). We had a gr...

Thursday, 12 May 2016. Out of the Fog. In light of Mother's day, we decided to paddle Saturday this weekend, and it was also the best weather forescast. We set out into the fog from St Philips, on our way to Brock Pond Falls. Here is Tony and Brian starting up the coast. The fog was not very thick and created a mysterious looking mist. It was quite nice to padde in it. Sue and Clyde having a chat with an infinity foggy backdrop. Brian heading into the fog. Clyde and Gary Paddling under a fog banket.

Friday, 15 July 2016. From Ice to Sooo Nice! Cape Broyle by Winter was spectacular! It was my most favorite paddle of the winter. See Tony's Blog. On Sunday, June 12th, we decided to paddle there again and this time, what was ice then, was tropical now! Well that is if you have on a dry suit and cover your blow hole! I just love kayak convoys :) . and the anticipation of a fabulous adventure to unwrap! Let the unwrapping begin! Then it was caves time :). And more caves time. Which looked like this on the...

My Newfoundland Kayak Experience: September 2014

http://mynewfoundlandkayakexperience.blogspot.com/2014_09_01_archive.html

My Newfoundland Kayak Experience. Happiness is an inside job." - William Arthur Ward. Friday, September 26, 2014. Last evening five of us met to play in the wind and waves at St. Philips. Pictures hardly do justice to the conditions so I decided to record some video. Previous video I shot was with the camera fixed to the foredeck but I found water drops stayed on the lens and the perspective was rather shallow. Saturday, September 20, 2014. Some rides down the larger meter and a half waves were exhilarat...

My Newfoundland Kayak Experience: April 2015

http://mynewfoundlandkayakexperience.blogspot.com/2015_04_01_archive.html

My Newfoundland Kayak Experience. Happiness is an inside job." - William Arthur Ward. Saturday, April 25, 2015. Instant karma and a new hip. Dean bought a new Jackson Karma RG. After taking delivery. Of it earlier this week, today it was time to take her out for a test run. Hint, its the blue/white boat. Hazen got the all clear earlier this month to resume normal daily activities after undergoing a hip replacement in February. He joined us for his first paddle since the operation. Rocks wherever he could.

My Newfoundland Kayak Experience: May 2015

http://mynewfoundlandkayakexperience.blogspot.com/2015_05_01_archive.html

My Newfoundland Kayak Experience. Happiness is an inside job." - William Arthur Ward. Sunday, May 31, 2015. The crown jewel of the Southern Shore - Part I. We left the city which was bathed in sunshine to drive to Cape Broyle for a Saturday paddle. As we drove down the Southern Shore highway the fog settled in. It was foggy too at Cape Broyle. Undaunted, we assumed the sun would eventually burn through the fog and we'd be in sunshine too. Dean paddles under an overhang in crystal clear waters. I've been ...

My Newfoundland Kayak Experience: June 2014

http://mynewfoundlandkayakexperience.blogspot.com/2014_06_01_archive.html

My Newfoundland Kayak Experience. Happiness is an inside job." - William Arthur Ward. Sunday, June 29, 2014. When you leave St. Philips there are three ways you can go: south or north along the coast or cross the 5 km wide Tickle to Bell Island. I proposed an easy short paddle to Topsail Beach. Derrick said he saw whales in the Tickle Thursday. Dean said there were no whales around yet. We agreed nonetheless to go to Bell Island and hope to find whales on the crossing. Paddling around Ragged Head and int...

My Newfoundland Kayak Experience: On the way to an unenviable record

http://mynewfoundlandkayakexperience.blogspot.com/2015/07/on-way-to-unenviable-record.html

My Newfoundland Kayak Experience. Happiness is an inside job." - William Arthur Ward. Thursday, July 23, 2015. On the way to an unenviable record. We are on the way to an unenviable record in the St. John's region. Its been a cold month so far with no summer in sight. It doesn't look good going forward into the end of the month either. It means we'll likely log the coldest July on record. That's about all one can say because until someone can do something about the weather we may as well . Cape St. F...

My Newfoundland Kayak Experience: December 2014

My Newfoundland Kayak Experience. Happiness is an inside job." - William Arthur Ward. Wednesday, December 31, 2014. Top 10 paddles of 2014 - #2. The weekend of June 7th saw me at the old community of Keels in Bonavista Bay. I was by myself as no one else was took the bait of vast numbers of reported icebergs. A three hour drive from home saw me at Backside Cove looking out over a horizon filled with icebergs. I worked myself out to the northwest extremity of the main pack and then . I padded back to take...

Newfoundland Kayakoholic: 2015: Post 35 – Bell Island

http://nlkayakoholic.blogspot.com/2015/07/2015-post-35-bell-island.html

If you just go for a paddle than you can stop thinking about wanting to go for a paddle. Sunday, July 26, 2015. 2015: Post 35 – Bell Island. Later last night Tony suggested a longish paddle from St. Philips to Bauline and back. I looked at the map, looked at the weather. it would be about thirty kilometers with the first half into a forecasted fifteen kilometer northerly wind. We made the crossing over to Dominion Pier where I laid my hand on one of the old piles. Tony (the geologist) found a rock with f...

Newfoundland Kayakoholic: January 2011

If you just go for a paddle than you can stop thinking about wanting to go for a paddle. Saturday, January 1, 2011. 2011: Post 1 - Happy New Kayaking Year. Maybe I need to have another talk with my financial adviser. I will paddle this year with these concrete and soft goals in mind. I will feel disappointed if I cannot get in the camping trips. I will not feel overly disappointed if I cannot reach my soft goals, although I will endeavour to reach them. I hope 2011 is a good kayaking year for everybody.

If you just go for a paddle than you can stop thinking about wanting to go for a paddle. Monday, August 29, 2011. 2011: Post 35 – A night at Gulch Pond. The word went out to gather troops for a camping trip in the Placentia Bay. The e-mails started going around for nearly a week. Clyde found a trip report by Peter Armitage on the club’s website and sent us all a picture of tents and kayaks on the shore of a place called Gulch Pond and dared us all to imagine ourselves there…. We kept resisting though.
