Rata and the Totara Tree Play. Restoring Mana to our People. As term one draws to a close I know it's one of the best starts to a year I have had for ages. I think the way we have embraced Google Docs and Google Sites as a means for sharing and sorting information has helped to make the planning of things more efficient and less time consuming. The sharing of docs has enabled me to get better information for specific documentation i.e. Individual Education Plans and RAMS forms. What I need to do. Keep ca...

Rata and the Totara Tree Play. Restoring Mana to our People. What does Maori Enrichment mean to me? After spending the last four days with my nephew I know it's about sharing your knowledge, ideas, passions, dreams, goals, frustrations and love of our culture. The experience of the Friday opening at Waikare on Q art gallery was one of the best ways for me being enriched in our beautiful culture. Standing in the gallery listening to the whaikorero and waiata was wonderful! What do I do now?

Rata and the Totara Tree Play. Restoring Mana to our People. Restoring Mana to our People. While in Nelson I been having good chats to my brother in law Beau and listening to his korero about his Rangatira owning much land in the north and that some of the land had been illegally confiscated by the crown and some lost through the corruption of some people at the Maori land courts. What have I got out of this discussion with Beau? What will happen if his claim is accepted? Beau has had difficulty with mem...

Rata and the Totara Tree Play. Restoring Mana to our People. Kanohi ki te Kanohi. The other day a colleague reminded me of the concept of kanohi ki te kanohi which I firmly believe is a big factor in making shifts in learning. This is something I use everyday with students, teachers, teacher aides and parents. I think I have always had good relationships with people in our school community but I know I need to raise my game to hopefully meet the targets set in literacy by our school this year. I am hopin...

Rata and the Totara Tree Play. Restoring Mana to our People. Rata and the Totara Tree Play. The kids love drama so I thought they could write their own version of a play based on Rata and the Totara Tree. I'll get the children to make good use of the computers in the library by giving them an opportunity to research the character they might like to play as well as find out the significance of why the totara tree was selected by Rata. First session back we will work on an action plan for the play with the...

Rata and the Totara Tree Play. Restoring Mana to our People. How the Project Started. My long-time friend and colleague Jane told me the other day her 8 year old grandson (camouflaged like a stick insect below) announced to some people visiting her at home he was going to be an entomologist. She also told me his dad took him to the BioBlitz volunteer weekend. For Christmas Jane bought him insect books and a magnifying glass. This gave me the idea to contact the Auckland Museum's Entomology Department to ...

Rata and the Totara Tree Play. Restoring Mana to our People. Andrea and I walked to the workshop at the Auckland Faculty of Medical and Health Science and the whole way there we chatted about kids and the importance of forming good relationships with them. We also talked about the challenge of keeping track of kids because they go to other teachers for different curriculum needs. The biggest message I got from the last speaker a mum (Kate de Groot) of three children with learning difficulties was about R...
