Let me tell you a little more about this little venture we've got goin' up here affectionately known as jazz fest (lowercase, thank you very much). When you've got nine days and a laminated thingus that gives you access to just about any show you'd want to see, as long as you're occasionally willing to stand in line for 60 or 90 minutes, well, it's easy to feel reeeeeally hungry for jazz. There's something to be sai...

I was so naive as a kid I used to sneak behind the barn and do nothing." - Johnny Carson. Friends don't let friends . Well, there once was this grand plan for some fabulous reportage this week. It's a pain in the ass, to a certain degree, but playing Beat The Clock is a game I've gotten fairly good at, so it feels as though I'm making a contribution to something somewhere. No doffing of the shoes with Bruce, I figured, but surely it'd be a radical, noteworthy gig. And friends don't let friends blog drunk.

I don't feel like I have a fixed home. Those of you who've known me for more than a little while know that I've long struggled to be truly comfortable in my environs. But I usually cave, especially if I'm alone, and let 'er rip. It was a good place, and it feels good to hav...

I was so naive as a kid I used to sneak behind the barn and do nothing." - Johnny Carson. I didn't plan sufficiently for attending the GrassRoots Festival. Last weekend, but maybe that's the whole point. Safety third, as one woman's t-shirt said. Here, let me try to convey to you why you should make the trip to next year's festival and, in the process, remind myself of why I loved it so much. Yup, and yup.) Did you ever go to the Eno Festival? Where did you go hiking? Raven Rock, right? We laugh and shak...

I was so naive as a kid I used to sneak behind the barn and do nothing." - Johnny Carson. What prepares us for life? Eating a good breakfast, a stop at Starbucks, Kool-Aid, Wonder Bread? Sadism, monochromism, elitism? Nonpartisan, exertion, Capri Sun? Can you prepare for a decidedly indulgent weekend by bulking up on decadence? By being in solid physical shape? Or does debauchery take less of a toll on those who have less to lose? How much is too much to lose? How do we prepare, then, for change? We foun...

Those of you with whom I've worked and played over the years know that I'm way curious about how we create great places to work and play. . How is it that some newsrooms, some newspapers, are so much smarter than others? If we could create the perfect place to work, would we? Links to this post. Meet my pal, Sandy Mandala. I was so naive as a kid I used to sneak behind the barn and do nothing." - Johnny Carson. It was a Thursday like any other Thursday. Working nights affords a person the luxury of living two days in one. You get all the daylight you want, you get stuff done when other people are working, and then you go to work. So on a recent Thursday, I tried to shoehorn in as much as I possibly could before going to work. And what if it happens to me? On the off chance that I lose my job, what's the first thing I'll do?
