Curiosity | Nick Baines's Blog
https://nickbaines.wordpress.com/2015/07/31/curiosity
Nick Baines's Blog. Musings of a restless bishop. July 31, 2015. Posted by nickbaines under christ. This is the text of this morning's Pause for Thought on the Chris Evans Show on BBC Radio 2 with Brian Cox. What was great was that their curiosity grew as we saw the sights of my home city and wandered round the museum of curios. But also of still small voices that penetrate the noise and tickle the soul. Sometimes, when you are in the thick of it. Well, knowing me. And possibly knowing you. Nick, I almos...

Nick Baines's Blog. Musings of a restless bishop. April 19, 2015. Where the Sun (still) don’t shine. Posted by nickbaines under media. A couple of days ago Katie Hopkins wrote a piece in the Sun. Newspaper in which she called migrants on the Mediterranean “cockroaches”. The Sun saw fit to publish this. She would prefer to send gunships to desperate migrants rather than rescue ships. Which editor at the Sun thought this would be acceptable in a newspaper? And what responsibility does the Sun take? How do ...

Nick Baines's Blog. Musings of a restless bishop. September 27, 2011. Posted by nickbaines under Church of England. Last Saturday, in an interview. In the Times, the comic actor Rowan Atkinson. Accused Church of England clergy of being smug and arrogant. He didn’t just poke a little fun at them and he didn’t seem to be joking:. The Times kindly asked for a comment before publication and duly published my response in full:. No evidence here. Just a humility and courage that gets stuck in against the o...

Nick Baines's Blog. Musings of a restless bishop. May 21, 2015. Posted by nickbaines under theology. This is the text of this morning's Thought for the Day on BBC Radio 4's Today programme:. Prince Charles in Ireland. Prince Charles's speeches in Ireland this week have been profoundly moving. It seems to me that he did three things. This is the conundrum, isn't it? Reconciliation is not easy and is never cost-free. The German martyr Dietrich Bonhoeffer cried against notions of what he called “c...Finally...
Bishops and politics | Nick Baines's Blog
https://nickbaines.wordpress.com/2015/02/17/bishops-and-politics
Nick Baines's Blog. Musings of a restless bishop. February 17, 2015. Posted by nickbaines under politics. This morning the BBC. Programme brought together a bishop and a politician to discuss the pastoral letter to be published later today by the House of Bishops. The Daily Telegraph and others tell the bishops to stay out of politics because they are “left-leaning”. And, pace the Telegraph, if bishops and other Christians are to keep out of politics, who else is to be excluded? Verily, the mind boggleth.

I have more questions than answers: August 2009
http://ihavemorequestionsthananswers.blogspot.com/2009_08_01_archive.html
I have more questions than answers. The blogging of a constantly questioning vicar. Monday, 10 August 2009. I'm on holiday - for three whole weeks. A few days in and the weather has returned to be 'typical' British summer - grey clouds, not particularly warm, you get my drift! However, we have had a few days of good weather and we're off to the South. Of France on Friday where the weather is good and hopefully will continue to be so. A couple of other minor things' childcare for MPs. Sport My beloved Har...

I wasn’t going to blog about Greenbelt this year but decided to as it’s nice to compare year on year. I did a lot of posts about it last year. But I’ll just do a short, mostly visual one this time. 8216;s stand (click the link to see pictures of me! I am only a dry tree.’.

Wednesday, 28 November 2012. Quote for the Day. God in the child in the manger. God comes. The Lord Jesus comes. Christmas comes. Christians rejoice! To be early with my Nativity scene suddenly seemed a wise, but convicting thought. I had kept it around for the sake of convenience, what about the sake of remembering? Hallowed Chaos: Thank God for Social Media

Learning on the job as a wife, mother, and priest and discovering God in the chaos of entwined vocations. Thursday, 22 November 2012. Thank God for Social Media. On Tuesday evening, Evensong had just finished at Salisbury Cathedral when I checked my Twitter feed. OK I won't lie. I had been checking it during the service too. The Synod hashtag feed was repeatedly refreshed, except during the singing by the choir of the Magnificat. My Soul magnified the Lord and my Spirit rejoiced in God my saviour. But on...

Learning on the job as a wife, mother, and priest and discovering God in the chaos of entwined vocations. Monday, 19 March 2012. I've been thinking about defining a chaos scale. Kind of like the Richter scale for earthquakes or the Beaufort scale for wind. This week, I've done five visits. That registers highly on the chaos scale as it eats into other time I may have available for preparation for other things. But it's all about building good relationships and I really enjoy it. A fantastic concert by my...

But the books and films and spin-off merchandise are all the product of a very creative imagination. And I've been pondering the power of imagination all week. Hermione's time turner. My own is yet to produce. A single millisecond of extra time! What does it really mean to be good news to the poor, to bring sight to the blind, freedom to captives? JK Ro...

Learning on the job as a wife, mother, and priest and discovering God in the chaos of entwined vocations. Saturday, 7 April 2012. A Good Friday reflection. Sung) Were you there when they crucified my Lord? Were you there when they crucified my Lord? Oh sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble,. Were you there when they crucified my Lord? Not many were at the end. Some women, one of his friends. Perhaps the rest all finally understood where all this. Following Jesus, living in the. Your true self, I mea...

Living Technology – musings from inside the machine
Musings from inside the machine. How My Garden Grows. I recently attended a talk. On the fragmentation, alteration, and deletion of female bodies in digital media. I found her approach to deletion compelling, and was inspired to revisit an old project of mine that used and altered found images. For that project I wrote a script to gather images from the now-defunct Mass Traveler webcams, and created an algorithm to blend multiple frames together over time. I find it interesting that for all the high tech...
