Nikki's Stitches

Sunday, 28 June 2015. A Bouquet of Belcarras. I've made a few Belcarras recently, but hey why not when they are easy to make and the fit is great? There's not much to say, so I'm going to let the photos do the talking. A picture paints a thousand words so they say. This is my bouquet of Belcarras made in June. I think this must have been the worst of the lot to make, but knowing the pattern made it a whole lot easier, but yes, I was swearing sometimes! Fine polyester something from Fabric-a-Brac, I think...

Nikki's Stitches: February 2015

http://www.nikkisstitches.blogspot.com/2015_02_01_archive.html

Wednesday, 18 February 2015. Felicity goes on a picnic. I've been pattern testing! When the call went out for testers for this dress from my fellow kiwi, it sounded like it was perfect for me "a breezy summer dress with a gathered neckline, all-in-one yoke pockets on your choice of a gathered or 3/4 circle skirt and finished off with bias binding at the neckline and armholes.". My luck was in! So, I unpicked the bias binding, unpicked the gathering threads and restitched the gathers again, ensuring they ...

Nikki's Stitches: Gillian awesomeness

http://www.nikkisstitches.blogspot.com/2015/06/gillian-awesomeness.html

Friday, 5 June 2015. Now I love a wrap dress as much as the next, but never until now have I found a wrap dress which fits, doesn't gape and just makes me want to wear it all the time. This if you haven't guessed is the Muse Patterns Gillian dress. Yes I know it's from the creative mind of my great friend Kat from the WSBN, but honestly I am NOT biased. Just read the reviews elsewhere on the Interwebs and you'll believe me! Pictures, give me pictures! Plain red knit and blue floral knit from the Fabric W...

Nikki's Stitches: September 2014

http://www.nikkisstitches.blogspot.com/2014_09_01_archive.html

Saturday, 20 September 2014. Gifts fit for a baby. Some good friends of ours have just had a little girl, who was born two weeks ago. When we knew they were expecting a present from the stork, I just knew I wanted to make something, but what I didn't know. It was time to break out those knitting needles again, even though I don't really consider myself much of a knitter, the gift just had to be knitted. I eventually found this blanket pattern on Ravelry. The baby's father is mad on the local football tea...

Saturday, 13 June 2015. Please let me introduce Ninacarralindy! So I changed my job about four months ago and now I work at home half the time, so as much as I love to wear dresses, now it's got to the winter, all I want to wear are comfy and warm separates. Cue knit fabrics and easy to wear tops! Enter the StyleArc Nina cardigan, Sewaholic Belcarra and Itch to Stitch Lindy. Petal skirt, hence the title Ninacarralindy - like it? I made this up for the first time in May. Style Arc Nina Cardigan. Beginning...

More Men’s Coat V8940 (and Adventures in Thedas) | heycotton

https://heycotton.wordpress.com/2016/08/29/more-mens-coat-v8940-and-adventures-in-thedas

I sew garments (slowly) for fun in NZ. Bernina Activa 130/140 info. More Men’s Coat V8940 (and Adventures in Thedas). August 29, 2016. I’m still working on V8940. The fronts have all their understructure and padstitching. Which is a roundabout way of saying that everything I’ve done so far happens before Step 1 of the pattern. I did mention I’m slow, right? Given that it’s the later part of winter here, I’m sewing toward next winter. I referenced several books (listed in my last post. Https:/ ia902502&#4...

I sew garments (slowly) for fun in NZ. Bernina Activa 130/140 info. Bernina Activa 130/140 info. The Bernina 130 and 140 were introduced in 1998. There’s not a ton of info online anymore, so here’s a bit for anyone who might see a deal on one. The foot pedal allows you to sink the needle slowly when you need to be precise, definitely more slowly than my Bernina 1020 (which I love for other reasons), while hitting a similar top speed. A couple of facts…. 55 mm max stitch width. Just 13 stitches on the 130...

I sew garments (slowly) for fun in NZ. Bernina Activa 130/140 info. Sewing and hand embroidery books I have —. Including online resources like archive.org. I plan to write more reviews, but in the meantime, if you have a question about any that are hard to find info on, feel free to ask…. Books I refer to the most. The Encyclopedia of Sewing. By Adele Margolis 1987. Clear and detailed, it covers most everything in alphabetical order for quick lookup. ( my review at PR. Sew the French Way. My favorite tai...

Freedom from factory-made fashion. A little bit about me. 0 Degrees of Separation. Monday, 20 April, 2015. OMGoodness, I managed to finish something! I haven’t blogged for a long time! I have done a little bit of sewing over the past few months and I’ve started writing some blog posts but haven’t quite got to the stage of actually posting anything but fortunately Leimomi The Dreamstress. Came up with a brilliant idea for a challenge which would force me to blog about it. Went into her local Spotlight sto...

Shopping! | Off-grid Chic

https://fluffystuffy.wordpress.com/2014/09/09/shopping

Freedom from factory-made fashion. A little bit about me. Tuesday, 9 September, 2014. That got your attention didn’t it🙂. I love fabric shopping but what sewer doesn’t. I’ve almost given up on calling myself a sewer, I think I’m more of a fabric collector and curator. Unfortunately I work with museum professionals who laugh heartily when I say this and tell me that I’m definitely a hoarder, but what the heck do they know. A riot of joyous colour and everything is really cheap. Thursday, 11 September, 20...

Two dresses, a jacket and no funerals… yet | Off-grid Chic

https://fluffystuffy.wordpress.com/2014/10/20/two-dresses-a-jacket-and-no-funerals-yet

Freedom from factory-made fashion. A little bit about me. Two dresses, a jacket and no funerals… yet. Monday, 20 October, 2014. OMGoodness, I managed to finish something! I made three garments in two weeks! I’m not sure I’ve ever managed that before. I probably have in the misty obscurity of my past when I was young and full of the joys of life but these days I’m just not normally that productive. I love these bright colours and now I want to get more of this kind of fabric to make stuff. I was intending...

Gussets Galore | heycotton

https://heycotton.wordpress.com/2016/06/26/gussets-galore

I sew garments (slowly) for fun in NZ. Bernina Activa 130/140 info. June 26, 2016. Sew the french way. Gussets were mentioned on a recent episode of the. Great British Sewing Bee. And since I haven’t sewn one, I paused to grab a few books. (Any excuse to crack open old sewing books.). Construction methods were varied with outright contradictions about when to hand sew and when to machine sew, how to reinforce, and whether and when topstitching is okay. I’ve scanned some in for comparison…. The longest se...

https://heycotton.wordpress.com/2016/05/02/muslins-for-mens-coat-v8940

I sew garments (slowly) for fun in NZ. Bernina Activa 130/140 info. Muslins for Men’s Coat V8940. May 2, 2016. I’m working on Vogue 8940, which is the first thing besides boxers I’ve made for my OH. After 2 1/2 test garments, I think I have the last fitting issue sorted, and am waiting for him to wake so I can pounce and (after his coffee; I’m not a monster) have him try it on yet again. Over the past couple of months I’ve referred to several books, including. By Adele Margolis,. Also by Margolis,. Aliso...

Bernina 1020/1030 info | heycotton

https://heycotton.wordpress.com/bernina-1020-1030

I sew garments (slowly) for fun in NZ. Bernina Activa 130/140 info. There’s a lot more info online for the 1020/1030 than there is for the Activa 130, so I’ll get right to the specs and manual…. You’ll notice the 1020 doesn’t have the basting stitch the 1030 does, but you can baste on any machine with a zigzag by using a double eye needle. See my video. Scans from my 1020 and 1030 instruction manual. Share on Facebook (Opens in new window). Click to share on Pinterest (Opens in new window). Sent from my ...

Nikki's Stitches | A sewing diary…

A sewing diary…. December 7, 2016. December 7, 2016. I made this a year ago! And I’ve finally got around to photos – oops! I first saw this pattern and fell in love with it when I saw this. Originally from Sewaholic. After seeing this version I just wasn’t happy until I’d clicked buy on the Style Arc website! The notched collarless neckline, cropped style with a curved hem. What is there not to like? The jacket is completely lined, including the sleeves and has a big facing which the lining is attached t...

Nikki's Stitching

My stitchy progress, as well as random ramblings and comments. Sunday, August 3, 2014. Been getting some good stitching time in so far as I have been off work. Ascendant is first up, I have finished about half a page into this row. She gets neglected, but everytime she comes out it reminds me how much I love her. Large Travel Bookshelf is currently being worked on, very close to another page finish! While my stash size is increasing, I was finding my rotation very difficult to manage, so I have pared thi...
