Noch einmal mit gefühl. It’s nearly impossible for me to adequately describe Karneval. To someone who has never experienced it. I could say that nearly everyone in the city dresses in costume Thursday through Tuesday. Which is true. Last weekend, in desperate need of getting off German soil, I packed up and visited a friend in Amsterdam for approximately 38 hours. This isn’t a whole lot of time to dedicate to one’s inaugural visit to a country, but in this time I managed to:. Spend some time in a coffee shop. Eat (probably) my weight in Stroop. Snap a few pictures on a cloudy, self-guided walking tour of the city center. Not a bad way to spend a weekend.

Friday, November 29, 2013. Stephen and I went to Brussels last weekend to see Arcade Fire. In concert*, selecting Brussels out of the European options (Brussels, Paris, Berlin) because neither of us had ever been there. In the five years I've lived in Germany, I'd still never even been to Belgium! Through Belgium, sure, but I hadn't ever stopped there. Brussels. Who knew. The Arcade Fire concert was very, very fun. It was a fancy dress or costume concert, so we busted back out our crocodile and roach.

Noch einmal mit gefühl. If there is one thing I love above all else, it is an occasion to dress up in a silly outfit. And drink with my friends. I am lucky enough to have some friends living in Southern Germany (the best part of Germany, obviously) and last weekend we met up for a good old-fashioned Bavarian Bier Festival. Picture Oktoberfest in the forest. Despite the fact that I already own a bright pink Dirndl. Though not without first swapping blouses for one I liked better). Don’t be a whine-r.
