Saturday May 3rd 1941. Midnight. Lone German Bomber. A Direct Hit on Crowded Public Air Raid Shelter. 107 People Killed. The worst single bomb disaster outside of London during the entire war. ARP Rescue workers and activity at disaster site – May 4th 1941. 2 George Medal and 1 British Empire Medal recipients. George Newstead (GM), Clarence Burdis (GM) and Norman Darling Black (BEM). Despite her own injuries, shelter warden Mrs Lee helps over 30 people to safety. Her efforts went unrewarded.
