Notes from a Melody

Notes from a Melody. Wednesday, May 7, 2014. Even if you aren't Catholic II. From the Sistine Chapel we were led to the Basilica of St. Peter. For which there are almost no words. It is absolutely stupendous. Huge and gorgeous, and of course, crowded with tourists, so that getting a picture without heads or shoulders or whole bodies was a challenge. Anyway, the Holy Door is kept sealed except for Jubilee years - usually every 25 years - when there’s an elaborate opening by the Pope. You simply are not ab...

Notes from a Melody: July 2013

http://www.notesfromamelody.blogspot.com/2013_07_01_archive.html

Notes from a Melody. Saturday, July 27, 2013. Un po' di vino. We’re going to take a little break from sightseeing now, since the next two sights were churches, and you’ve probably had enough of churches for a while. We’re going to a wine tasting. The wine tasting took place the following afternoon, on our way back to Florence, after spending far too little time in Siena (I wasn’t the only person to feel this way). As always, hurry hurry hurry to get on to the next place. But the tasting went on far.

Notes from a Melody: March 2013

http://www.notesfromamelody.blogspot.com/2013_03_01_archive.html

Notes from a Melody. Sunday, March 3, 2013. Saving the world for the rest of us. I’ve figured out what the problem is. Who starts and perpetuates wars? Who become terrorists, dedicated to destroying themselves and as many innocent people as they can take with them? Who shoot little girls in the face because they are scared to death to allow females equal rights and opportunities? Who go on murderous, assault-weapon rampages, killing dozens of innocent people? Who commits most of the crime, period? Men &#...

Notes from a Melody: Onward and Upward

http://www.notesfromamelody.blogspot.com/2014/02/onward-and-upward.html

Notes from a Melody. Wednesday, February 26, 2014. I’m sure those of you who were following my Italian saga with some. Interest, at least, gave up hope long ago that I would continue. This failure to get on with it, to finish. A writing project, has long been a problem for me. I admit to lacking the expertise to explain this phenomenon, unless it is that I am just plain lazy. At any rate, to “get on with it” at last: I would have to say that Siena is a must-see, if you’re going to Italy. The first, San D...

Notes from a Melody: Heading south

http://www.notesfromamelody.blogspot.com/2014/04/heading-south.html

Notes from a Melody. Wednesday, April 2, 2014. All right, I’d seen one ruin that I had been eager to see, but there was still that ruin of all ruins, Pompeii. But I and about four other people were going to Pompeii. Indeed, that had always been one of my primary objectives in visiting Italy. Those of you who know me know that the older something is, the more I’m interested in it. But stones that let your imagination take over, and fill in the blanks. The problem with it was that it lasted 12 hours! We we...

Knit and Bead Times: August 2009

http://knitandbeadtimes.blogspot.com/2009_08_01_archive.html

Knit and Bead Times. Adventures in travel, knitting, beading, and retirement. Monday, August 17, 2009. New York's Bead District. Dateline: New York, 7/16/09 - 7/28/09. I didn't actually buy anything at M&J Trimming. But I was fascinated by browsing there. They have some beads, and an incredible inventory of sequins, ribbons, rhinestones, etc. I imagine that this store is frequented by fashion designers and people creating costumes for Broadway shows. Which is a fantastic store for beadweavers like us&#46...

Knit and Bead Times. Adventures in travel, knitting, beading, and retirement. Sunday, April 12, 2009. What Happens in Vegas. Dateline: Las Vegas, NV, 3/25/09 - 3/30/09. Whoever invented that slogan for Las Vegas probably didn't have beading in mind. But beading was the reason that Jim and I drove to Las Vegas. It was the second annual BeadAway, organized by Brea Bead Works. The drive was an all-day event, about 10 hours including a stop for lunch in Bakersfield. We ate at the 24th Street Cafe,. After Cin...

Knit and Bead Times. Adventures in travel, knitting, beading, and retirement. Friday, July 15, 2011. Finding My Father's Family. Dateline: Emerald Hills, 7/15/11. I immediately started asking myself the logical next questions: Was his German wife still alive? Did they have any children, who would be my half siblings? And how would I ever find out the answers from 6000 miles away, and without speaking much German? Links to this post. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Emerald Hills, CA, United States.

Park and ride at 280 and Edgewood. Jocelyn picked me up and we headed to Burlingame. Bought: 3 skeins of Laines du Nord Mulberry Silk. 11:15 - San Mateo. All of us liked Nine Rubies' one-skein project, a beaded purse in both knit and crochet. The pattern came with a 10% discount at The Beading Frenzy. At Creative Hands, I receiv...

Knit and Bead Times. Adventures in travel, knitting, beading, and retirement. Tuesday, September 22, 2009. Walking in New York. Dateline: New York, 7/16/09 - 7/28/09. When I'm in New York, I usually don't gain weight even though I eat more than usual, because of all the walking I do. While we were there, an article in the New York Times. At home I would never set off on a 3-mile walk; my usual walking loops through the hills are 1 mile and 1.5 miles. But one day I used Gmaps Pedometer. Links to this post.

Knit and Bead Times. Adventures in travel, knitting, beading, and retirement. Tuesday, July 29, 2008. Dateline: Stockton, 7/11/08; Petaluma and San Rafael, 7/19/08. Whose sign we happened to see on the way into town. There we heard that there was another bead store in town, so of course we made an unscheduled stop at Beads Plus. The excuse for the knitting trip was to go to the Muench Yarns. After lunch we headed south to San Rafael, where we stopped at two more yarn stores, Dharma Trading Co. Although I...

Dateline: The Western U.S., 8/20/09 - 9/1/09. Our first stop in Yellowstone was to see some of the geysers, one of the many features that make the park unique. The next day, we saw two eruptions of Old Faithful, the most famous geyser of all. We heard that 90% of visitors to Yellowstone never get out of their cars, much less take a hike like this.

Knit and Bead Times. Adventures in travel, knitting, beading, and retirement. Tuesday, May 13, 2008. Cousin Jeffrey's 60th Birthday. Dateline: Emerald Hills, 5/14/08. He was born the same day as the state of Israel, May 14, 1948. I was born one year and two months later. We spent a lot of our early childhood together. His mother, Roz, and my mother, Jean, are sisters, and we all lived in Passaic, NJ. My mother and I had moved in with her parents after my father left us. I took the subway, he took the bus...

Notes from a Messy Desk

Notes from a Messy Desk. Friday, December 28, 2012. Merry Christmas, one and all! Though considering how long it has been since I blogged, I don't imagine there are many of you dear readers left to wish a "Merry Christmas" to). Ah, Christmas break! That sweetest time of the year has arrived, and, indeed, is nearly past. Shrieks the Optimist in my mind, who would like to think that this joyous repose could continue always. Yes, dear reader, you read that correctly. I will be giving speeches. To clarify, i...
