Killing Shapes: Go Coma
http://www.killingshapes.com/2010/12/go-coma.html
Thursday, December 16, 2010. I went into a 'go coma' for about four months, which is to say, I stopped playing go entirely for a while. Work got too busy (still too busy). It was bad timing because it coincided with my entry into the Insei league. Signed up a month or two before, Sept was the first month it came active again). So instead of a minimum of 12 games I clocked in. er. zero. So, that sucked, the entry fee isn't cheap either. December 17, 2010 at 12:39 AM. Im not sure if you saw it when you wer...

Thursday, August 19, 2010. James Davies' Tesuji Book. The fantastic Elementary Go Series books. The title 'elementary go series' always throws me off - I keep thinking it's for like 20kyu or thereabouts (the first book may be, I'm not sure). It's not. In fact, I'd say you'd just about have to be single digit kyu to really appreciate most of them. The reading on most of the problems taxes me, and I'd say I'm currently running around 8-7kyu. I was surprised to learn so many new things in this book! Go Sear...

Killing Shapes: October 2011

Friday, October 14, 2011. Confirmed: I Have Rank Rot. Back this time last year, my rank charts plummeted. On my turn based servers (OGS, DGS) because I'd let work take a hold of me and let many dozens of games expire. My rank dropped into the abyss. Outside of a few weeks though, I did not really stop playing. I kept playing turn based games, the occasional (increasingly rare) live KGS game. The occasional re-read of go problems on the shitter. Sort of a tepid go commitment. Of improving my rank? AGA - A...

Monday, December 14, 2009. NOVA Winter Warmer Tournament. My first 'real life' tournament. Biggest challenge was parking (I should have known to take the Metro into Rosslyn! But other than that a good time. I wish I had some game records to review though! Won 1 of 4 games, which is better than 0 of 4. I entered as 13k, and I think my AGA rank is probably 14-13k in that context. One unexpected effect of playing serious IRL (in-real-life) games is that eye movement. Links to this post. AGA - American Go As...

Tuesday, July 12, 2011. Great Wall of Death. I'd mentioned the Great Wall Fuseki. In the past, but recently I'd started up a slew of games on OGS. And started most all of them with this opening, including some as white. I do believe that this fuseki is inferior to traditional openings, if only because professionals do not use it. Also because I tend to consistently do worse with this fuseki than if I'd tried a normal opening. But, I will say, it is. That's what my rank is. The opponent to invade, and by ...

Sunday, December 19, 2010. Just a quick post: I found a neat little page that takes data from KGS and displays it in a useful format:. There's also what looks like a REALLY cool application to view in even more detail, but looks like you may have to brush op on your Japanese to do so: http:/ www.geocities.jp/msanpopo/kgs.html. Software to be ported to iOS and/or Android! Links to this post. Thursday, December 16, 2010. Just as I was getting back to playing daily, OGS went down for a week - hardware woes&...

Saturday, January 30, 2010. Alright, been a long time since posting. Still playing go though! First up: Blog Rot! Here's the tough part: I can play go or blog. Not many chances to do either, and when I've got one. well. Also, I'm fully aware, that like most bloggers, I'm blogging to myself. If you are reading this, you must come to understand this brutal truth:. You are just a figment of my imagination. And while you're in there, dust a bit, for God's sake. And play me they did. A '-' rank (wtf? We took ...
