A Climbing Betty: December 2013
http://aclimbingbetty.blogspot.com/2013_12_01_archive.html
Sunday, December 15, 2013. Get the Girls Out". One of the things I value most about my life of climbing and skiing is that it gave me an out. It gave me a different measure of success then what I think our society gives most women and girls. About being a strong, badass woman? About pursuing your dreams and living life on your own terms? About being unique and being yourself? My nieces are really into all the Disney Princess stuff. How do I know I'm not being ridiculous about this? They have now. As ...

A Climbing Betty: April 2012
http://aclimbingbetty.blogspot.com/2012_04_01_archive.html
Friday, April 20, 2012. The local ski season ended way too early this winter. Ditto for the local ice climbing season. The Catskill resorts were able to eek out the crumby snow conditions only until March 25 before they gave up in utter desperation. The ice climbing season had ended about 3 weeks prior to that. You might be able to ski slush, but you certainly can't climb it. Half a dozen times in a winter. In a really good year. So for me, ice climbing season, is generally not. Links to this post. Climb...

A Climbing Betty: May 2012
http://aclimbingbetty.blogspot.com/2012_05_01_archive.html
Tuesday, May 29, 2012. Memorial Day Weekend Adventure. I was lucky in that my partner for this scheme is fairly strong physically, but more importantly, is not easily intimidated. When I first mentioned the trip to New Hampshire, I suggested we go hike Mt. Washington as training for summit attempts on Rainier later this summer. Talking him into going for the whole Presi Traverse instead was easy- like taking candy from a baby. Monday, May 7, 2012. Dirt under my fingernails. Weekend was well spent. Even t...

A Climbing Betty: June 2012
http://aclimbingbetty.blogspot.com/2012_06_01_archive.html
Wednesday, June 27, 2012. Plight of the Chicken-Hearted. We booked the tickets Friday night. I wasn't as excited as I thought I would be. Just that morning, I had seen on Facebook the news story about the park ranger who slipped and fell to his death rescuing 4 climbers who had fallen into a crevasse. More then anything, I felt fear and self-doubt. 'Why am I spending all this money to potentially end up dead? Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Plight of the Chicken-Hearted. View my complete profile. A Climbing Betty: February 2012
http://aclimbingbetty.blogspot.com/2012_02_01_archive.html
Saturday, February 25, 2012. My new favorite word: Alpinista. But the power and freedom of climbing! I don't know that that first "hit" would have been nearly as powerful if it hadn't contrasted so sharply with my prior experience, but thankfully it was because it instantly created a radical shift in the course of the rest of my life. Love for climbing. I could only lead 5.4, but man, having my own trad rack made me the shit. In my own head, at least. Another badass climbing lady I admire is Janet Bergma...

Monday, April 15, 2013. Sometimes dreams do come true. The dream: climbing on the summit pyramid of Mt. Shuksan, photo by Ryan Stefiuk at Bigfoot Mountain Guides. In my opinion, though, this is one of the truly great things about climbing- there are challenges to be had at all levels. At the end of the day, I like to think that what we really respect in our fellow climbers is that they push themselves, not the numbers. Gunks goils on top of Rainier, August 2012. Sunday, November 24, 2013. Fisher Chimneys route Mt. Shuksan, Day 1. Oh my poor, neglected little blog. What can I say? Sometimes you're just too busy doing it to write about it. :-) Right now, we seem to be in between seasons, so I have a little extra time to write. Let's see, when last I left off, I was spewing about my Live Your Dream Grant from the AAC to climb the Fisher Chimneys route on Mt. Shuksan. If you prefer the Reader's Digest version (SPOILER ALERT) we did it! Or all of the above? The view ...

A Climbing Betty: Fisher Chimneys route Mt. Shuksan, Day 2

Monday, December 2, 2013. Fisher Chimneys route Mt. Shuksan, Day 2. If you missed Day 1, you can go check it out here. After gaining the col, you are deposited briefly on the White Salmon glacier. Here we changed over our gear for glacier travel. When I could be relaxing on a perfectly safe beach with a Mai Tai and a hot cabana boy to look at? Winnie's Slide is just ahead. It looks deceptively low-angle in this shot. At the top of Hell's Highway you are deposited on to the Sulphide Glacier. This beco...
