Dr Atchison and Mrs Evans: The nostalgia of illness
http://dratchison.blogspot.com/2015/02/the-nostalgia-of-illness.html
Dr Atchison and Mrs Evans. Thursday, 12 February 2015. The nostalgia of illness. It was the 1980s and this little girl always got sick. I have a little theory muddling around about nostalgia and the various arguments against vaccination. With a measles outbreak in the USA now entering Canada, not to mention mumps going round the players of the NHL. Which says you’re an individualistic product of western capitalism. My memory of German Measles (Rubella), however, isn’t so complete. Why? I wasn’t vac...

Dr Atchison and Mrs Evans: November 2013
http://dratchison.blogspot.com/2013_11_01_archive.html
Dr Atchison and Mrs Evans. Saturday, 23 November 2013. Louisa May Alcott 1832-1888. The other week I reread Little Women. For the first time in ages, for academic purposes. No really, enjoyable though the process was, it was actually for academic purposes. But from a very non-academic perspective, I was struck by how my reception of Louisa May Alcott’s novel has changed over the years. Drank some champagne at a party, got a bit flirty, married Laurie’s teacher, and then had twins. -Ah, young Er...Just as...

Dr Atchison and Mrs Evans: December 2013
http://dratchison.blogspot.com/2013_12_01_archive.html
Dr Atchison and Mrs Evans. Tuesday, 17 December 2013. That old Christmas chestnut of children's gifts. Christmas is upon us and it’s time for advertorials thinly disguised as social commentary, like a recent offering from The Guardian. 8220; Are you a Pank - Professional, Aunt, No Kids? Well, guess what? And parents are really at a loss as to how to deal with all this stuff. You can give blanket bans on presents, but such requests are typically ignored or actively resented. Furthermore, most of t...Let&#...

Dr Atchison and Mrs Evans: May 2013
http://dratchison.blogspot.com/2013_05_01_archive.html
Dr Atchison and Mrs Evans. Thursday, 23 May 2013. The one-boobed bra buyer. And related issues. Aside from the fact that no one is asking whether she’s having her ovaries removed for preventative measures, my thoughts turn the perceived inevitability of breast reconstruction. Here’s a quote from an article. From an obviously biased plastic surgery source about Applegate’s reconstruction:. Ideally, Dr. Alderman continued, cancer doctors would refer all women considering mastectomies or lumpectomies (t...

Dr Atchison and Mrs Evans: March 2014
http://dratchison.blogspot.com/2014_03_01_archive.html
Dr Atchison and Mrs Evans. Tuesday, 4 March 2014. Bring me to the test. Zenda Smith School of Dancing (Howick, November 1985). Of course, the standard response from people is, “An exam for a five-year-old? Activities have got ridiculous! Kids should just be having fun.”. I should know, because I’m exactly the same. 8220;But you have a PhD! 8221; someone yells from the gods, “There’s proof you’re self-motivated.” Yes, but I had the incomparable Professor Susan Manning. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). I may di...

Dr Atchison and Mrs Evans: July 2013
http://dratchison.blogspot.com/2013_07_01_archive.html
Dr Atchison and Mrs Evans. Wednesday, 31 July 2013. Careers begin at 40. Or 35. Or whenever you can make it happen. Unrealistically assuming the baby in her belly wouldn't inhibit the grand plans in the head behind that large tam. Claire Tomalin. The great biographer of our age. She was once “crying into a washbasin of baby clothes,” despairing that her ambitions and capabilities “were going down the plughole with the soapsuds.”. See, there’s time, my bluestockinged sisters! New Orleans novel The Awakeni...

Dr Atchison and Mrs Evans: February 2014
http://dratchison.blogspot.com/2014_02_01_archive.html
Dr Atchison and Mrs Evans. Saturday, 8 February 2014. Baby considers opening statement on her mother's seminar plan. Another week, another article about stay-at-home mothers. The one I’m thinking of is positive, which is great, but borders on a worrying sanctification of motherhood that some people admire but I don’t really buy into. It all comes down to what works best for the parents and the family. And what about the big choice about children and the way you parent? I certainly didn’t choose to ...

Love, Laughter and Redemption: Tuesdays Unwrapped #1
http://laughter-redemption.blogspot.com/2013/12/tuesdays-unwrapped-1.html
Wednesday, 11 December 2013. Tuesday is our busiest day. Swimming lessons, kindergarten pick ups and drop off's repeated twice more than usual. With December comes Christmas parties and shared lunches, and so my baby and my little three year old man had a more exciting day than usual yesterday. And can I mention the utter JOY that appears on the face of a three year old boy when offered a lollipop at the end? Is there anything in life as an adult which gives us the same spontaneous delight? I love hearin...

Dr Atchison and Mrs Evans: September 2013
http://dratchison.blogspot.com/2013_09_01_archive.html
Dr Atchison and Mrs Evans. Thursday, 19 September 2013. I wear yoga pants. Just like my mom. Women and girls of suburban North American, quit it with the yoga pants as pants trend. Not just because it’s ugly - oh, it is ugly, and the Fug Girls. Have been telling you so since 2008, but you clearly never got the memo that Tights are not Pants. Or you just thought it was a cute ironic thing to laugh at with the girls. You need to stop wearing them because it’s weird. Seriously, who are you trying to impress?
