http://occams.blogspot.com/2006/06/sezen-follow-up-coffee-espresso.html

Friday, June 16, 2006. Sezen Follow-up: Coffee & Espresso. Chemistry & Engineering News. Wrote a follow-up story. On the Sames-Sezen retractions today. Although there is not much more in the way of details past what the New York Times. Wrote yesterday, I cannot resist including this quote from Bengü Sezen regarding the potential irreproducibility of her experiments:. Maybe I don't take my coffee seriously enough, but what happened to apples and oranges? What a terrible metaphor. 3 4 = 7 Sames Retractions.

Occam's Blog: February 2005

Friday, February 25, 2005. Live fast and die young. Although there are exceptions, most big animals live a long time, while small ones live fast and die young. Metabolic rates, the speed at which an organism gets energy from food, seem to be proportional to body mass raised to the 3/4 power. It appears as if we've been gifted with just so much life, you can spend it all at once or slowly dribble it out over a long time.". Brian Enquist, ecologist, University of Arizona, Tucson. Although it's easy to be s...

http://occams.blogspot.com/2006_03_01_archive.html

Wednesday, March 22, 2006. Recently reported results from this Nature paper. In humans it turns out that the α-2,6 liked dissacharide is mostly found in the bottom of the lungs. So if you're unlucky enough to get the H5N1 virus all the way down to the bottom of your lung, you're sunk. Fortunately for the rest of us, it's pretty unlikely (since it way at the bottom) that you'll sneeze or cough any virus up at your neighbors. And you'll be okay. This story was also covered by Chemical & Engineering News.

Occam's Blog: June 2006

http://occams.blogspot.com/2006_06_01_archive.html

Saturday, June 17, 2006. Splenda is Scary Stuff. Which comes in those little yellow packages that now reside alongside those red and blue satchels of sugar substitutes at restaurants, has got its fair share of press over the years. There's plenty of opinions on whether this "made from sugar" sugar substitute is safe to eat or not. Some have compared the structure. Of Splenda (the trade name of sucralose. Which others compare it to sodium chloride. Or read about how it was discovered. Understanding how th...
