Ocracoke Historic Restoration

Monday, June 14, 2010. Well, not quite. Anyone who knows the blog world will have recognized the signs of blogger's fatigue in the extended periods between my posts. In fact, it is not so much blogger's fatigue, as builder's fatigue. Ok, so what's really happening here? We are doing this project on a really really tight budget. Frankly, as a professional builder, I would have turned myself away if I had come to see me with a proposal for this project and this budget. Opening Day in our new place! This is...

Ocracoke Historic Restoration: February 2010

http://ocracokehistoricrestoration.blogspot.com/2010_02_01_archive.html

Monday, February 22, 2010. Restoration Can Mean Small Projects Too. This is a pretty big project that encompasses practically every aspect of residential construction and overlays the demands of historic restoration onto every detail. It is complex and fun, but I want to make the point that most restoration work is not like this. Much important historic work happens on a small scale without the fanfare of a big showy project. Ocracoke Historic Restoration: October 2009

http://ocracokehistoricrestoration.blogspot.com/2009_10_01_archive.html

Monday, October 26, 2009. Hey, there are termites in here! This is one of the board walls we found - you can see one section was painted a cool blue:. This pic shows the south wall with an old window opening (closed in) to the right. We'll restore that to its original. Sunday, October 11, 2009. Paperwork Paperwork and more Paperwork. I understand the purpose is to allow any "aggrieved" neighbor an opportunity to file a complaint. I understand, but it is an irony I can't let go by. Subscribe in a reader.

Ocracoke Historic Restoration: Oooh Baby It's Cold Outside

http://ocracokehistoricrestoration.blogspot.com/2009/12/happy-new-year-to-all.html

Thursday, December 31, 2009. Oooh Baby It's Cold Outside. On behalf of the guys who built it originally, we have gotten a few laughs over the extensive engineering language specifying the modulus of elasticity/bending strength required for the oak pegs! Our guys have been starting in the mornings by chipping ice off the scaffolding and ladders. I have to say I don't miss that, but I have to admit that I do miss this old New England architecture. Ms K, of course. December 31, 2009 at 4:20 PM. Hey Joan, ch...

Ocracoke Historic Restoration: November 2009

http://ocracokehistoricrestoration.blogspot.com/2009_11_01_archive.html

Sunday, November 29, 2009. Update w/lots o' pics. I couldn't bring myself to duplicate that, even though it clearly stood for many years and even withstood the occasional hurricane. Being cautious, however, we rebuilt it using 2x6 rafters, but we cut the rafter tails to match the appearance of the original 2x4's and we installed them on 24" centers. Here are some pictures of progress to date. Front stripped and ready for sheathing. North side stripped to original framing. Monday, November 16, 2009. All t...

Island Daily: August 2010

http://islanddaily.blogspot.com/2010_08_01_archive.html

Musings, stories and photographs about my life on a small island off the coast of North Carolina. Wednesday, August 11, 2010. If you've visited Ocracoke even once (even if you just drove through on your way to the Hatteras ferry), you surely know about the Lighthouse. Odds are good that you know about the British Cemetery. And if you've visited fairly recently, you most likely noticed the historic marker commemorating the Beach Jumpers, on Highway 12 just outside the village. Links to this post. Please b...

http://islanddaily.blogspot.com/2010_07_01_archive.html

Musings, stories and photographs about my life on a small island off the coast of North Carolina. Monday, July 12, 2010. I found a broken sand dollar in my lap, which had been on the dashboard. My sister did a wonderful job of calming me down and calling 911. My back and neck hurt immediately, so I got an ambulance ride to the hospital on a backboard (two words: seriously uncomfortable), but the CAT scan showed no major injuries ("just" whiplash, I suppose.which is enough.ouch). Musings, stories and photographs about my life on a small island off the coast of North Carolina. Thursday, September 30, 2010. Things we take for granted. The island is faring well so far during this storm. There's the usual flooding in the standard areas where it's expected, but no major issues that I've heard about. I haven't seen anyone kayaking down my street, so it's not as bad as that nor'easter last November. (Or at least not yet, anyway.). Links to this post. Links to this post. 3-6" of heavy ra...

Musings, stories and photographs about my life on a small island off the coast of North Carolina. Sunday, April 17, 2011. Toni was smarter than they thought. My Mom and I attended the final performance of "We Must Kill Toni" today, and it was terrific! The cast was made up of 5 Ocracoke School students, all of whom did a great job and had many lines to memorize. The set was amazing.the Community Center was completely transformed! Oh, and don't worry.they didn't kill Toni. She was a smart cookie.
