Friday, 28 February 2014. Kerala Trip - Part 3. Thankfully the entire week did not involve camp-fire cooking and instant noodles. Since we weren't too far from a small village we started walking the short distance mainly for meals. The closest place for tea and breakfast was Pushpa Chechi's hut. We were there before the idlis were ready and mostly amused ourselves each day watching a mother hen and her brood clucking about busily. Some of those chicks were really feather-brained! madras or thereabouts: Workshop with Frank Ching
http://kalpanabalaji.blogspot.com/2015/07/workshop-with-frank-ching.html
Friday, 31 July 2015. Workshop with Frank Ching. 23rd July my first workshop of the symposium was with Frank Ching. Known to me for many years as Francis D.K. Ching he is the author of several books on architecture, all hand illustrated. My formative years as a student were largely spent gazing at his exquisite drawings and when I recently found out that he too is an urban sketcher it pretty much became my life's ambition to meet and sketch with him. He's a great teacher and it was a fabulous experience.

Wednesday, 30 April 2014. It's nice to be a student again. This last weekend I attended a watercolour workshop by Dhruba Mazumder. Which I had been looking forward to for weeks and it more than lived up to my expectations. Over the last few years, most of my sketches have been pen and watercolour washes but somehow, while attempting a "pure"watercolour, I found my courage failed me at the end and I added pen strokes to get my desired effect. By the end of the second day I ended up with this. By then ...

Friday, 14 August 2015. Third workshop and finally.Colour! An entire week has sped by and I realised I'm only halfway through my workshops. For those of you following my blog closely sorry for the delay! And for those just stepping in here are my previous posts on the symposium:. The first day's workshops had been entirely pen and ink work. The next morning I was doing this workshop. Thursday, 6 August 2015. Capturing people in action and crowds. Straight after my workshop with Ching. We started off sket...

Thursday, 5 June 2014. My special little sketchbook. I prefer it to taking photos any day. Of course photos bring back memories if and when you go through all 40 GB of them, but with the sketch, even the making of it is a memory in itself. This sketchbook is a great one to have. It's really tiny and compact but opens out flat so I can do doublespreads. You can check out some of my previous posts. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). I'm an urban sketcher. View my complete profile. Tuesday, 19 August 2014. First Show in Kandy. We had two shows of Jujubee in Kandy. Both organised by the Catholic community there. Father Nandana, the Parish Priest of St. Antony's Cathedral in Kandy had mobilised everyone and they had really taken care of all our needs. The famous annual Buddhist festival of Esala Perahara. With Sam from NTT giving us a well informed tour. The next morning we were up at dawn to leave for the venue of the first Show - Good Shepherd Convent, Kandy. Tuesday, 12 August 2014.

Wednesday, 15 April 2015. This sketch is technically only half finished, but given my recent track record I thought it would be better to share it as is, rather than wait to finish it at home, something that may never happen. More and more often, I find I don't have the patience to improve or "finish" a sketch once I leave the spot where I did it. While I did this my mum sketched me! You can check out her sketch here. Saturday, 11 April 2015. Newcomers are given a tutorial and then made to go through all...

rene fijten sketches: Maastricht, sketchcrawl
http://renefijten.blogspot.com/2015/08/maastricht-sketchcrawl.html
Wednesday, 5 August 2015. My (new) computer broke, and I lost the last month of data and scanned drawings. As well the digitally coloured versions of Akai Usagi. So I am lagging behind with my blogposts, and trying to find out what I am missing anyway. Here are two quick sketches made during the last sketchcrawl, some 2 weeks ago; it was the only bad weather day so far this summer. Bad luck. They each took me about 5 minutes to make. rene fijten sketches: Harlingen, Friesland
http://renefijten.blogspot.com/2015/06/harlingen-friesland.html
Thursday, 18 June 2015. Before I continue with the Strasbourg series, I will show you the drawings I made yesterday. I had a business trip up north, to Harlingen, to visit a salt production plant. Harlingen is a very old Dutch town located directly on the sea. It is as Dutch as you can get: canals, gabled houses, ship locks, sailing-boats, fishtrailers and so on. Here are two sketches: above the old sail ship "de Marieje", dating from 1898. It just returned from a trip and was mooring. Yep it is Michael.
