About Old Coach Road. Welcome to The Ohakune Coach Road. Walking or riding along the historic cobblestone Ohakune Coach Road through a bush corridor on the slopes of Mount Ruapehu is an exciting adventure, a journey back in time. Look for the concrete piers for the bridge which crossed the Haeremaere Stream on the original railway alignment, the steel lattice Taonui Railway Viaduct. And enjoy expansive views across the Waimarino Plains. Alongside the 1987 concrete Hapuawhenua Viaduct.

About Old Coach Road. Skyline Section (From Ohakune). The Skyline section of the road climbs through the bush until it reaches the highest point of the road at around 2400 feet above sea level. Here the older bridle trail road heads more directly towards Horopito. The newer 1906 section of road continues to the Taonui Viaduct. Along the Skyline section are some very interesting features. About Old Coach Road. This is the Ohakune end of the road. As you climb enjoy the view across the Waimarino Plain, which was covered with bush till the timber was milled. Near the top, the road leaves the farmland and enters Tongariro National Park and winds its way through the bush to the old gate post at the boundary of the old 1908 railway alignment. About Old Coach Road. New Zealand Historic Places Trust granted the Taonui Viaduct a Category 1 Classification (HPT Record No.9266) on March 27th, 2009. The viaduct is 460 feet long, 115 feet above the Taonui Stream, has a 1:60 gradient and is built on a 10 chain radius curve. The Ohakune Coach Road under the Taonui Viaduct. About Old Coach Road. The first Hapuawhenua Viaduct was classified as a Category 1 structure by Historic Places Trust in October 1995. The viaduct became redundant when a new concrete railway viaduct was completed in 1987. From Ohakune, the railway line has to climb around 500ft up to Horopito.
