Okains Bay Maori and Colonial Museum. Treasures from our Maori and Colonial Past presented in a truly unique setting. The Museum is governed by its Trust Board which meets bi-monthly, and is directed by Murray Thacker. The Museum employs two custodial staff who live on the site. The many special projects of the Museum have been carried out largely with volunteer labour, with specialists skills brought to the Museum on a contract basis as necessary.

Waitangi Day is a very special time for Okains Bay Maori and Colonial Museum and the local Maori and Pakeha community. Waitangi Day started being celebrated at the Museum in 1977 and it is the longest continuous celebration in the South Island.

Waka Shed

Across the road from the Museum building is the Waka shed which houses the Museum's two large waka. These both have an amazing history. Make sure you take the time to wander across the road to check these out.

Whare Taonga

Okains Bay Maori and Colonial Museum. Treasures from our Maori and Colonial Past presented in a truly unique setting. The Whare Taonga houses some of the rarer objects that have been collected by Mr Murray Thacker over many years. These include a sacred god stick dating back to the year 1400, a war canoe dating back to 1867 and a valuable Akaroa hei tiki recovered from England and bought back to Okains Bay by the Museum's founder.

Old School

Looking to give your children an experience of what education was like in the old days? The answer is here at the Museum. With funding from the Lotteries Commission and hours of voluntary labour, the restored building was formally opened to the public on Waitangi Day 2009. Contact the Museum office if you would like to make use of the school facilities.

Blacksmith

The Blacksmith's shop houses an extensive collection of blacksmithing tools, many donated by local concerns, that help give a real feel to the important job a blacksmith did in small communities in times past.

Chathams Room

Opened on Waitangi Day 2012, the Chathams Island Display Room houses items of interest from the Chatham Islands donated to the Museum from various benefactors. Items include fish hooks and tools made from natural materials found on the Chathams as well as items connected with the European involvement with the Chatham Islands.

Colonial Hall

Okains Bay Maori and Colonial Museum. Treasures from our Maori and Colonial Past presented in a truly unique setting. The Colonial Hall has a vast collection of items relating to the Colonial era from Okains Bay and other areas on Banks Peninsula, including whaling exhibitions, dairy equipment, the pioneer women display and the Little Akaloa Store collections. It also includes displays on the early pioneering families of the Bay including items of great significance which belonged to them.
