Old Blue Silo: Beat the Winter Blues
http://www.oldbluesilo.com/2015/03/post-created-for-rural-housewives-of.html
Mar 2, 2015. Beat the Winter Blues. Post created for Rural Housewives of America. Lately, I've been in a funk. Not a stinky funk. A blue funk. And I am blaming the old man. No, not my husband. Old man winter. It's funny. Many of us, come October, can't wait for hot chocolate, hooded sweatshirts, cozy blankets and hanging out by the fireplace. Well, all those things can go to. Usually winter and I are friends but it's March 2nd and I don't think winter is going away quite yet. They once said,. Suggested t...
Old Blue Silo: Growing Season
http://www.oldbluesilo.com/2015/07/growing-season.html
Jul 7, 2015. About this time of year, my husband and I get asked a certain question on a daily basis from colleagues, friends, neighbors, etc. How do your crops look. Typically in agriculture, we call this the growing season. I think it's the hardest part about a farmer's job. Seed is in the ground. Pesticide and fertilizer have been applied. Then, it's time to watch the crops grow. Will our crops have hail or wind damage? What about insects and fungus? Will there be a weed that takes over? I guess that'...
Old Blue Silo: Bacon Cheddar Scalloped Potatoes
http://www.oldbluesilo.com/2015/04/bacon-ceddar-scalloped-potatoes.html
Apr 17, 2015. Bacon Cheddar Scalloped Potatoes. I am slightly embarrassed how long it's been since I posted a recipe. Here on Old Blue Silo. Recipe posts are often times pretty intense. Food photography is extremely challenging. Half the time I cook without a recipe so when it comes down to sitting down and writing the recipe, I have to figure out how to translate measurement. I need to be honest with you. This recipe is not going on a billboard. All great cooks have that inner potato intuition. 6 Slices...
Old Blue Silo: an end to #harvest13
http://www.oldbluesilo.com/2013/10/an-end-to-harvest13.html
Oct 24, 2013. An end to #harvest13. Harvest is something every farmer looks forward to. We love to watch to our yields, run the equipment and work sun up to sun down. Meals with the family are enjoyed in the field and we get to work together as a team. Life is a fast-paced, crazy frenzy and the adrenaline rush is like being at a Garth Brooks concert. I just love it. All good things must come to an end. And we are just as excited for #harvest13 to end as we are for it to start. My husband's Uncle and cous...
Old Blue Silo: Homestead Versus Industry
http://www.oldbluesilo.com/2015/06/homestead-versus-industry.html
Jun 23, 2015. I was recently asked to help out a friend with some photography for a Father's Day gift. This friend's father, uncle, brother and cousin operate a relatively large grain farm in my neighborhood. I've grown particularly fond of this family through their modesty, honesty and hard work. I've recognized their good character since I started dating my husband years ago before I even lived here. Just like any industry, it's easy to lose touch of your roots as you grow and become successful. I was ...

Asymp; 1 Comment. I’m not great with dates. As a matter of fact, I struggle remembering if my husband’s birthday is September 29 or 30. It’s the 30th… But it doesn’t stop me from debating between the those two days constantly. I’m pretty much walking chaos. If you’ve been reading my posts for a...So when my mo...

This Farm Family's Life: First Grader....
http://www.thisfarmfamilyslife.com/2012/08/first-grader.html
Monday, August 13, 2012. Today was the first day of school for B. She kept saying she wasn't ready to go back. She said she had too much fun this summer, which must mean I did my job, but when it was time to wake up and get ready she seemed excited.. Except for the heavy backpack that she had to carry! Her first day of first grade. She picked out her own outfit. She is in a "no pink and purple" phase although she has a lot of pink on her backpack! August 13, 2012 at 3:44 PM. This Farm Family's Life: Craft Time...
http://www.thisfarmfamilyslife.com/2011/11/craft-time_23.html
Wednesday, November 23, 2011. This craft idea came from Pinterest. You can find it. 65279; My niece was here and was able to join in the fun! We read a book about the first Thanksgiving. Then we set to work making our own Mayflowers. First, paint your child's hand brown and have them press it onto a sheet of blue construction paper. Then let them paint the ocean and clouds. Next, cut squares from white paper and glue them to the the fingers on the hand print. Pretending that she is using a bow. This comm...

http://www.thisfarmfamilyslife.com/2015/07/puffy-paint-ice-cream.html
Monday, July 20, 2015. Puffy Paint Ice Cream. July is National Ice Cream Month and what better way to celebrate all month long than by eating your favorite flavors of ice cream and making this fun craft? And I have joined together, thanks to Indiana's Family of Farmers. To bring you a homeschool lesson and craft all about ice cream! Last winter we made puffy paint snowmen (which I will share later), so we decided to make ice cream cones with the same "recipe.". Optional, or another color of your choice).

This Farm Family's Life: April 2015
http://www.thisfarmfamilyslife.com/2015_04_01_archive.html
Thursday, April 30, 2015. What is Anhydrous Ammonia? To maintain soil fertility without man-made sources of nitrogen, the 11 million tons of industrially created nitrogen that farmers in the US use each year would need to be replaced by manure from about 1 billion cattle. Those cattle would require another 2 billion acres to feed. That demand would take much of the continental United States. (source). So now you know what those white tanks are in the field! Tuesday, April 28, 2015. All you do is add the ...

http://www.thisfarmfamilyslife.com/2015/06/dairy-cow-bookmark.html
Thursday, June 11, 2015. June is National Dairy Month. To celebrate, I am partnering with Crystal at Mom for Less. To bring you a homeschool lesson and a cute little craft to learn about the wonderful world of dairy farming! This month we actually made two crafts! Growing up on a dairy farm, I love all things dairy so it was definitely hard for me to pick just one craft to create and share with all of you! The first craft we made was a dairy cow bookmark. Black (and possibly brown) sharpie marker. Glue t...
This Farm Family's Life: July 2015
http://www.thisfarmfamilyslife.com/2015_07_01_archive.html
Thursday, July 30, 2015. This was the first year that we have sprayed fungicide from the air, so the girls were pretty excited to watch. It's not every day that a helicopter lands in the barn lot! Here is a short video of the helicopter spraying. The helicopter landed on the back of the truck to fill-up with more fungicide. They are able to spray 26 acres between fill-ups. Here is a short video of the helicopter landing. A quick fill-up, which only seemed to take a couple minutes, and he was off again.
This Farm Family's Life: 22 Days...
http://www.thisfarmfamilyslife.com/2015/07/22-days.html
Thursday, July 23, 2015. 22 days. That is exactly how many days Jo has been paci free! I didn't think it would happen this soon(I know. I know. She's almost three, but I really wasn't worried about weaning her from it at this time.), or that it would be so easy. She always had at least two pacis everywhere we went, and if we were going for a car ride, I always made sure to pack at least 5! Excuse she always had the paci was because she is very strong willed! So, how did we wean Jo? We have visited the li...

Old Blues Cricket thoughts and reports. Wednesday, 12 August 2009. Old Blues vs Stowe Templars @ CH, Sunday 11th July 2009. The final scheduled game - could the Old Blues end the season in the way they began, with a win? Mitty was skipper for the day and the toss decided (I can't remember the outcome! So, 2 new batsmen at the crease, the Captain for the day, and Johnny with 2 half centuries in his last 2 innings (I love writing about myself in the 3rd person! Mar 13, 2018. Try it Tuesday: Travel Version. It is Tuesday, right? I've had to check like, twice. Yep, it's sort of Tuesday. They day that follows Monday. So, winter 2018 has definitely been dubbed the winter of traveling. In the last 5 weeks, I've been to Houston, Reno, Anaheim and St. Louis. All for agriculture-related business. I hold a few leadership positions with a few organizations and winter is usually when meetings and conventions go down. I've learned A LOT and I still have a lot to learn.
