Town and Country Blog: September 2013
http://blog.townandco.com/2013_09_01_archive.html
Wednesday, 11 September 2013. It is a delicate annual flower, lasting perhaps only a day, but is a plant nevertheless which has special meaning and a powerful beauty. It is also profligate in seed, so be aware, once successfully sown it will be forever more in your garden. Once you are satisfied, walk slowly over the area, sowing conservatively to make sure of an even spread. Posted by Nicole Dopson. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Wednesday, 9 July 2014. The traditional time to cut evergreen hedges is after the Epsom Derby, so all your beautiful box hedging, parterres and topiary should now be well on the way to being reshaped. You still just have a window to sow mange tout peas for an autumn crop of and successional sowings of salads. Posted by Nicole Dopson. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Town and Country Blog: November 2013
http://blog.townandco.com/2013_11_01_archive.html
Wednesday, 13 November 2013. However, as you rush off to the wood yard or petrol station to buy the wood, there are differences in the wood you burn. Pine, which is commonly bought at petrol stations, burns well, but fast. It also leaves a residue in the chimney so another visit from the sweep will be needed before winters end. Another that leaves a residue is cherry so try to avoid this. Finally, a tip I was once told with regards to that most dangerous of fire. You may just have saved the roof. I would...

Tuesday, 7 January 2014. What a start to the New Year! Alternatively, you could just use the special shoes or aerating machinery that is available, but given the amount of water that has fallen, and given snow is approaching, I am not sure this will suffice. Town and Country Blog: August 2014
http://blog.townandco.com/2014_08_01_archive.html
Tuesday, 19 August 2014. August is always the time we most appreciate the garden. It is the time when we supposedly see the garden in full. The flowers are a riot of colour. The vegetable area is providing bounty. The birds are singing, the insects are buzzing. We are at peace. But I think the really exciting thing is to realise just quite how long we as a species have been trying to improve the environment around our home. Imagine being the first man in. Town and Country Blog: Be weather wise!
http://blog.townandco.com/2014/05/be-weather-wise.html
Wednesday, 28 May 2014. All this proves that the soil is still not very warm - hence the old custom of putting your bare elbow or perhaps your bare bottom on the soil, to see if it is ready for some of the more delicate plants. Some plants like Cymbidium orchids need a few cold days to help them flower, but a frost is definitely a no-no. In those days, my obsessive temperament noted they had only got it accurate on 15 days in the entire year. Which is better than a soothsayer I suppose. I am a self-emplo...

Town and Country Blog: Blackthorn Winter
http://blog.townandco.com/2014/04/blackthorn-winter.html
Thursday, 10 April 2014. I must say, before the cold weather set in, I was enjoying the display of Magnolia flower. Many of you may be interested to know it is the very first example of an insect attracting flower, so thus it is the oldest flower design discovered in the fossil record. In the garden, you may just about get away with still planting bare-rooted shrubs such as roses and raspberries, provided you give them a copious amount of food and a healthy watering.
