Monday, 26 May 2014. It seems that winter has arrived in New Zealand. Even Nelson has become decidedly cold over the last two days with daytime temperatures barely making double figures and the first frost of the year last night, but the beauty of winter is that it brings snow to the nearby mountains and when you live in Nelson, this makes the view across Tasman Bay even more beautiful. In this small shop alone there were a dozen magazines dedicated to hunting and fishing: Rod and Rifle. Hooked on Boars,.

Tuesday, 26 August 2014. Hard Work Never Killed Anyone (Except Me). When my German friend Olli asked me if I'd like to help him with painting a house, my first instinct was to say: "Whoa, hang on a minute, buddy. I think you've got me confused with someone who actually does work.". Olli looked sad and tried to sweeten the deal by offering me money. Nope," I said. "You can certainly give me some money but I'm not actually going to work for it.". Now, contrary to popular opinion, I'm not a total. Olli was ...

Thursday, 8 January 2015. Explosions, Nudity, Violence and Swearing. Did you know that according to the official website statistics, my last blog only had 4 views? Of course you didn't. Why would you? You didn't even bother reading it. It's actually quite interesting that I only had 4 views because I can think of at least 7 family and friends who assure me that they read my blog on a regular basis. By comparison, the only problems I've had have been minor ones, and mainly related to my cleaning staff....

Tuesday, 29 July 2014. Before I begin telling you about my latest trip to Golden Bay, just a quick update on the Nelson Horse Man, Tane Ma Heke. There have been some big developments since I wrote about him in my last blog, and I'm sad to report that it is tragic news concerning his horse, Barney. Witnesses to Barney's accident didn't have much sympathy, it seems. The report states that they shouted "Serves you right! Or "Serves you right for wearing new horseshoes! This leaves no room for confusion.

Saturday, 14 December 2013. Hiking and Highbrow Culture. The track led us alongside the Cobb River, through a gorgeous valley covered in fields of wild daffodils and occasionally through areas of woodland, passing two smaller huts - Cobb Hut and Chaffey Hut - along the way, before a slightly more arduous climb into the hills took us to our destination. The Chaffey Hut, which amazingly contains 4 bunks. Is called Cobb around there). It was a long and arduous walk, made more difficult due to my wet sho...

MJ in NZ: September 2014
http://monkeychopsblog.blogspot.com/2014_09_01_archive.html
Monday, 22 September 2014. It has recently come to my attention that New Zealand may not actually exist. This surprising new information raises all sorts of interesting questions, such as "Does that mean that I don't exist? And "If I don't exist then who the hell is writing this? Before believing such a remarkable assertion, it's always important to hear some strong evidence to back it up, and in the mysterious case of the non-existent country, it seems that there are two factors involved:. I think the p...

Wednesday, 25 February 2015. 50 Shades of Backpacker. I do like a good generalisation and I have a healthy dislike of people in general, so imagine my delight when, after 6 months of hostel management, I realised that the vast majority of travellers passing through my hostel fall into pretty well-defined categories and they were mainly categories that I didn't like. “This is great,” I thought to myself. “It must be time for a new blog.”. AMERICANS WHO ARRIVE LATE AT NIGHT AFTER RECEPTION HAS CLOSED.

Wednesday, 22 October 2014. There's a New Hustler in Town. For weeks now, my friends Barbara and Olli have been urging me to take part in the pool competition at the local bar and I have been reluctant to do so, but last Thursday night, it finally happened. Well, the guy was taking part in the competition, so if I was as good as my word and he was as good as he thought he was, there looked like there might be a chance of us playing each other. It seemed to work. Right from the start, I was right on i...

MJ in NZ: Monkey and Pie's NZ Road Trip: Part 1 (Kaikoura - Hopewell)
http://monkeychopsblog.blogspot.com/2015/07/monkey-and-pies-nz-road-trip-part-1.html
Sunday, 19 July 2015. Monkey and Pie's NZ Road Trip: Part 1 (Kaikoura - Hopewell). Angie and I spent a month travelling around New Zealand's South Island in Autumn. This is the story of our adventure together. We convened in Kaikoura on a Monday evening for the start of our trip. Fortunately, we needn't have worried. Things got off to a very good start because Angie and I think along similar lines: we both instinctively knew that the best way to start a trip would be to eat unhealthy food and drink a...
