Friday, January 27, 2017. Travel Sketching with Watercolor. For watercolor I used a 3x5 Moleskine sketchbook with smoothly finished pages. The finish stands up to watercolor without bleeding, and you can use ink with it as well. As I sometimes do, the pages were toned with various colors beforehand. Here's a view of forested land near Redmond one dark winter morning. The bare deciduous trees made tracery against the evergreens and dark sky. Friday, January 20, 2017. Drawing in the Morning. I spend time d...

The Studio Journal: The Original Santa
http://papillary.blogspot.com/2016/12/the-original-santa.html
Friday, December 23, 2016. A year ago at Christmas I posted an image by Thomas Nast of Santa Claus. Published in the 1880s, that seemed to be the earliest image of St. Nick to be found. Turns out, someone beat him to it by several decades. Thomas Nast, Harpers Weekly. As I mentioned in that post, Nast certainly deserves credit for crystallizing the image of Santa Claus (or St. Nicholas- try saying that name very fast) set down in the famous poem of a few decades earlier by Clement Moore. Regardless of al...

Friday, February 26, 2016. In general, I begin portraits on a toned support, often 12x16 but occasionally larger or smaller, depending on whether the image is to be head only, head and shoulders, or half length. For most portraits, I tone with an umber, aiming for about value 5. For the imprimatura. I begin the portrait with an ebauche. Friday, February 19, 2016. Brushes Part 3 - Care and Maintenance. Friday, June 24, 2016. Over the last few weeks, studio work has involved not only drawing folds and drapery but various paintings and other drawings. In particular I've explored preliminary thoughts and ideas of new subject matter. Most mornings I spend at least a few minutes drawing, either to warm up for the easel or to explore various techniques and so on. Here are a few new drawings. Tuesday, June 21, 2016. Friday, March 25, 2016. Pages from a sketchbook. A few days ago while rearranging and consolidating files these sketchbook pages came to light. The first is a page of drawings of couples that I did to study walking and the interpersonal postures. You can tell a lot by watching body language, which is part of what these drawings were about. Cityscapes and street scenes are fascinating to me, especially when there are figures in action in a specific setting- people. Friday, March 18, 2016. This is the same...

The Studio Journal: Leyendecker's New Year Babies
http://papillary.blogspot.com/2016/12/leyendeckers-new-year-babies.html
Friday, December 30, 2016. Leyendecker's New Year Babies. Happy New Year, one and all. Each New Year reminds me of J.C. Leyendecker. Mr Leyendecker was well-known for the Arrow Collar Man. Images he produced for Arrow Shirts. He was equally known for his New Year babies. That appeared on the cover of the Saturday. Mr Leyendecker did no more covers for the Post after that, but he did New Year babies as posters. For the Amoco Oil Company during the remainder of the war, though the last two were basically t...

Friday, July 29, 2016. Outdoor painting- "en "plein air" if you happen to be French- has gained considerable momentum in recent decades. Like their predecessors, painters flock to the countryside and city streets to capture the fleeting light and transient landscape. Piccadilly Circus, Toward Shaftesbury Avenue," 2014. Observatory Hill, Greenwich," 2013. Coyde Bay, Low Tide and Moving Weather," 2012. End of the Day of the Pageant," 2012. Rain, Lower Regency Street," 2012. Pete the Street in All Weathers.
