North Reef Expedition 2011: Done & dusted
http://northreefexpedition.blogspot.com/2011/07/done-dusted.html
Thursday, July 28, 2011. We've just arrived into Keppel Bay after a rollicking ride across 40km from Hummocky Island. We hung back until 11am to try to avoid the monster current that clobbered us yesterday, and struck out for Emu Park with about 2 hours of the ebb remaining. Photos and more details to follow, we're going to put our feet up tonight and then head back to Sydney tomorrow. Thanks so much to everyone who has sent messages of goodwill and support through the trip, they were most appreciated.

North Reef Expedition 2011: Lady Elliot Island Crossing
http://northreefexpedition.blogspot.com/2011/07/lady-elliot-island-crossing.html
Monday, July 18, 2011. Lady Elliot Island Crossing. Greetings from Lady Elliot Island. Rob, Chris and I pulled into the tiny beach in the lee of the island at 8.20pm last night, having set out from a position approximately 2km to the North of Rooney Pt on Fraser Island just over 13 hours earlier. We camped Sunday night on Fraser in incredibly beautiful and pristine conditions, tucked into the lee of the dunes with a big moon providing the floodlighting. At about the 45km mark we were really making ground...

North Reef Expedition 2011: June 2011
http://northreefexpedition.blogspot.com/2011_06_01_archive.html
Wednesday, June 29, 2011. North Reef Expedition - the countdown begins. The iconic image of a lone lighthouse on a tropical island, some 110km off the Queensland Coast, makes a tempting target for a sea paddler. Unprotected by the reef, and subject to shifting and largely unpredictable currents which give birth to East Australian Current, the area is a renowned rough water seaway best avoided when things aren't all lined up in the mariners' favour. Or it's close neighbour North West Island. We'll all be ...

North Reef Expedition 2011: 42km Lady Elliot to Lady Musgrave
http://northreefexpedition.blogspot.com/2011/07/42km-lady-elliot-to-lady-musgrave.html
Sunday, July 24, 2011. 42km Lady Elliot to Lady Musgrave. The forecast models for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday all had the wind cranking up again by mid afternoon which lowered our margin for a safe passage to Musgrave below an acceptable level. Friday's forecast from Karel at kayakweather.com was far more encouraging however, for the first time predicting a drop that would stay down. Our forecast for Sunday is ideal, winds 20 kn from the SSE to SE, so the plan is to get going early and continue our '...

North Reef Expedition 2011: Our Island Homes….
http://northreefexpedition.blogspot.com/2011/07/our-island-homes.html
Thursday, July 7, 2011. Our Island Homes…. Our expedition takes past more than 20 reefs, cays and coral islands, but unfortunately there are only three in the first 200km on which we're allowed to land. This has meant a bit of logistical pre-arrangements with the owners and managers of two of the three islands to accommodate us and our likely unpredictable schedule. The first stop is. The second of our 5-star stopovers is the world renowned. We've promised to spend a few hours on the water with Tim when ...

North Reef Expedition 2011: All set, waiting for weather confirmation
http://northreefexpedition.blogspot.com/2011/07/we-landed-in-bundaberg-this-morning-to.html
Saturday, July 16, 2011. All set, waiting for weather confirmation. We landed in Bundaberg this morning to grey skies and a honking Sou'Easter churning up the sea. The forecast is for it to build over the weekend then drop Monday and swing to the south west on Tuesday. We're now in Hervey Bay waiting on tomorrow's 4am forecast to confirm the SE winds and then we have Ken standing by with his charter to run us out to Rooneys for the take-off. All three of us are excited and raring to go. This blog will do...

North Reef Expedition 2011: North West to Hummocky
http://northreefexpedition.blogspot.com/2011/07/north-west-to-hummocky.html
Thursday, July 28, 2011. North West to Hummocky. We left North West this morning just after sun up, after yet another pack and load in the early morning darkness. We had long morning on a dead sea with a head current for half the day which slowed us to just over 6kmh. We spotted a whale about 5km off North West, and the flying fish continued to put on their spectacular aerial shows. It was a nice way to end what was probably the only uninspiring day on the water on our whole trip. This blog will document...
