During the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, the Spanish Armada sailed by Portland, but the castle didn’t see any action. It was fought over by the two sides in the English civil war, when it was used as a jail for the enemies of Oliver Cromwell. During the first world war, Portland Castle was used as a seaplane station, and as a departure point for the D-Day invasion during world war two.
