Kafka for uSwitch's Event Pipeline - pingles
http://oobaloo.co.uk/kafka-for-uswitchs-event-pipeline
Blog of Paul Ingles. Laquo; Back to blog. Kafka for uSwitch's Event Pipeline. Is a high-throughput, persistent, distributed messaging system that was originally developed at LinkedIn. It forms the backbone of uSwitch.com’s new data analytics pipeline and this post will cover a little about Kafka and how we’re using it. Kafka is both performant and durable. To make it easier to achieve high throughput on a single node it also does away with lots of stuff message brokers ordinarily provide (making it a.
Amazon Redshift + R: Analytics Flow - pingles
http://oobaloo.co.uk/amazon-redshift-plus-r-analytics-flow
Blog of Paul Ingles. Laquo; Back to blog. Amazon Redshift R: Analytics Flow. Ok, so it’s a slightly fanboy-ish title but I’m starting to really like the early experimentation we’ve been doing with Amazon’s Redshift. Our current data platform is a mix of Apache Kafka. And a set of heterogenous data sources mixed across the organisation (given we’re fans of letting the right store find it’s place. Building data systems on immutable principles. R already has a package for connecting to databases using JDBC.
Introducing Blueshift: Automated Amazon Redshift ingestion from Amazon S3 - pingles

Blog of Paul Ingles. Laquo; Back to blog. Introducing Blueshift: Automated Amazon Redshift ingestion from Amazon S3. I’m very pleased to say I’ve just made public a repository for a tool we’ve built to make it easier to ingest data automatically into Amazon Redshift. From Amazon S3: https:/ github.com/uswitch/blueshift. Amazon Redshift is a wonderfully powerful product, if you’ve not tried it yet you should definitely take a look; I’ve written before about the value of the analytical flow it enables.

Blog of Paul Ingles. Laquo; Back to blog. Monitoring Go programs with Riemann. USwitch.com uses Riemann. To monitor the operations of the various applications and services that compose our system. Riemann helps us aggregate systems and application metrics together and quickly assemble dashboards to understand how things are behaving now. Most of these services and applications are written in Clojure, Java or Ruby, but recently we needed to monitor a service we implemented with Go. We’ve gone from using i...
MapReduce with Hadoop and Ruby - pingles
http://oobaloo.co.uk/articles/2010/1/12/mapreduce-with-hadoop-and-ruby.html
Blog of Paul Ingles. Laquo; Back to blog. MapReduce with Hadoop and Ruby. The quantity of data we analyse at Forward. Every day has grown nearly ten-fold in just over 18 months. Today we run almost all of our automated daily processing on Hadoop. The vast majority of that analysis is automated using Ruby and our open-source gem: Mandy. In this post I’d like to cover a little background to MapReduce and Hadoop and a light introduction to writing a word count in Ruby with Mandy that can run on Hadoop.

Data Engineering. People. Data Engineering. People. A magical promise of releasing your data and keeping everyone's privacy. Differential privacy is one of those ideas that sound impossible. It is a mechanism outputting information about an underlying dataset while guaranteeing against identification attempts by any means for the individuals in the data [1]. In a time when big data is so hyped on one hand and data breaches seem rampant, why aren't we hearing more about differential privacy (DP)? To under...

Data Engineering. People. Data Engineering. People. 19:57 from Castro to Twin Peaks. I've been running from Castro Station to Twin Peaks almost every morning for a month. I started off at about 25 minutes and 30 seconds from bottom to top. Today on my last day here in San Francisco, I broke below the 20 minutes mark. It's a 2 mile distance up 800 ft. Pretty proud of myself for making it in 20. Here's a step through of my run using Google StreetView. The start at Philz Coffee. Left turn onto Castro Street.
Incremental deployment | nutrun

I've recently had a chance to look at a high availability system designed and built by Forward. It is a critical web service with a very high impact of failure. Essentially, it must. Stay up at all times. The service is hosted on Amazon EC2. It makes use of EC2's geographically distributed regions and different availability zones within each region, fronted by AWS Elastic Load Balancing. And additional global DNS fail over outside of EC2/AWS. Incrementally deployed one availability zone at a time. Each d...

I literally have a folder on my desktop titled "blog posts" but haven't felt the timing is right just yet and they feel incomplete. Blog of Paul Ingles. Google BigQuery: Copying data between projects and locations. I’ve worked on a tool called Big Replicate. That we’ve open-sourced: it helps copy, and synchronise, data between different datasets in projects in Google BigQuery. I’m a huge fan of Google’s BigQuery product: a large-scale, and affordable, hosted data-warehouse. We use BigQuery most often with our Google Analytics data. Google provide a daily export. With binaries also available. The tool will find all tables that exist i...
