Previously titled ‘Jilji: Life in the Great Sandy Desert’, the cover of ‘You call it desert we used to live there’ depicts the exodus (and recent return to country) of the people from the Great Sandy Desert. The cover also seeks to convey isolation the isolation of the Great Sandy Desert and the isolation the Aboriginal communities experienced from being away from their country.

TheSumOf was commissioned by Aboriginal publishing house Magabala Books to design and develop two desk diaries. From the outset we were interested in understanding how Aboriginal people view the calendar year, which is fluid and circular, but also how we might develop the diaries as a cross-cultural tool. Both diaries (2010 and 2011) include a calendar wheel reflecting Aboriginal seasons combined with Western months, with inside pages featuring excerpts from books by Aboriginal authors.
