The special and harsh climate conditions often lead to quick changes in the road-weather. Especially during the long winter period the road might be snowy, slushy, icy or wet. The newly rained water can easily make a dangerous surface on the road when the temperature quickly sets lower. However, a system that would communicate these changes to different road-user segments, is absent. What kind of role can technology have in increasing the safety on the arctic roads? NEWS FROM THE SPRING 2013. WEB APPLICATIONS USED IN VISUALISING THE ROAD-WEATHER DATA. The data collected in Luleå during the winter season 2012/2013 has been analyzed and the result is an improved friction estimation using the RoadEye sensor. The friction is divided into five different friction intervals (0-0.2, 0.2-0.4, 0.4-0.6, 0.6-0.8 and 0.8-1 µ) where friction below 0.4. Μ means that there is a risk for slippery road conditions depending on what kind of tires are mounted on the vehicle. Go to the T...
