Thursday, 13 March 2014. To solve this problem in my game, I added a subtle and fixed background of stars and anchored the player's spaceship to the centre of the screen. This introduced a feeling of depth to the visuals that surprised and impressed me immediately However, because the background was fixed, my spaceship still had no point of reference for relative movement when nothing else was on the screen. Wednesday, 23 April 2014. Procedural Planet Terrain (best viewed in HD). As I have said before, you can circumnavigate the planet surface and exit the atmosphere at different points in space - I show this with my "Twin Peaks" planet visit in the video. Yes, I will make the spaceship point the right way on the transitions, if I keep these transitions. And yes, I may re-introduce the terrain auto-zoom that I showed in my previous video. Thursday, 13 March 2014. I've been thinking about how to implement planets. You will be able to land on planet surfaces and possibly fly through caverns etc. Those details are for a later time, but for now I need to come up with a good way of showing planets whilst in space - remember, we are talking basic 2D top-down like Atari Asteroids here. Tuesday, 1 April 2014. I've improved the planet entry/exit handling so that, as you move across the surface of the planet, if you subsequently head back into space then your spaceship reappears at the equivalent new position on the planet's surface. I will re-visit zooming at a later date, although I am considering multi-player networking and this current solution has some advantages if I can get networking to run smoothly enough.
